Ghost of Tsushima hit the scene back in 2020, and since then, developer Sucker Punch has been busy crafting its follow-up. Many fans naturally assumed that the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima would be a straightforward second chapter that followed protagonist Jin Sakai, but many were shocked to find out last year that this wouldn't be the case.

Instead of a direct follow-up, Ghost of Tsushima's next chapter is set to be Ghost of Yotei. Set 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, brand-new lead character Atsu is an exciting new direction, but it also leaves a Jin-shaped hole in a lot of fans' lives. This isn't the first time a Sucker Punch protagonist has been left with an unclear future, though. Over the years, this has become somewhat of a pattern, and it hopefully isn't one that Jin repeats.

Ghost of Tsushima Didn’t Have a Gwent-Like Minigame, But Ghost of Yotei Will

Ghost of Yotei's release date and Collector's Edition, which includes a real-life edition of a playable minigame, Zeni Hajiki, have been announced.

After Ghost of Tsushima, Jin Sakai Could Be Meeting the Same Fate as Other Sucker Punch Heroes

Sly Cooper and Infamous

It's important to note that the last game in the Sly Cooper franchise wasn't developed by Sucker Punch, but the thieving raccoon is still a major name on the developer's roster. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time ends with Sly being transported back to Ancient Egypt. It's been over a decade since that game was released, and there have yet to be any concrete answers about what's in store next for Sly and his friends.

In the case of Infamous, original protagonist Cole MacGrath was thought to be dead by the end of Infamous 2, but fan theories have suggested that his fate is more optimistic. The return of the Infamous franchise has been on a lot of gamers' wish lists, but as of now, Sucker Punch has no official plans to continue the series. Since no revival is in the works, that leaves the verdict out on whether Cole is actually dead or not. Of course, the ending of Infamous 2 did make it seem like he was definitely gone, but a lot of fans are still holding out hope.

Ghost of Yotei is set to release for the PS5 on October 2, 2025.

Jin's Open-Ended Story Raises Questions

At the end of Ghost of Tsushima, players can either decide to let Jin honorably kill Shimura or step away from the samurai code and let him live. Now that the Shogun considers Jin a threat, he is a wanted man, and it's completely unclear if he will live out the rest of his life in peace or have to go up against the Shogun.

Atsu is an exciting new direction, but it also leaves a Jin-shaped hole in a lot of fans' lives.

Of course, Jin's story is a little bit more clear-cut than the likes of Sly and Cole, but it still leaves plenty of room for more story. Even though the island of Tsushima has been saved, Jin's journey feels far from over. Whether it be because of the Shogun or the impending second Mongol invasion that takes place seven years later, Sucker Punch still has a deep well of potential to pull from. Also, Ghost of Tsushima, Infamous, and Sly Cooper all have really strong protagonists that are easy to get attached to, so being unable to revisit these characters in a new story can be frustrating.

Ghost of Yotei introduces dual-wielding swords and matchlock guns.

Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei Can Hopefully Live in Harmony

While it may be a surprising direction for a sequel, Ghost of Yotei still looks incredibly compelling. However, getting to see Jin Sakai one last time would also be welcome by a lot of fans. Only time will tell if the developer brings back Jin for one more tale, but until then, he follows the tradition of a growing list of Sucker Punch protagonists that have mysterious fates.
