Subdetection Units are robots made by the Fontaine Research Institute, so it's no surprise that Genshin Impact players will come across them as they travel throughout Liffey Region and Fontaine Research Institute of Kinetic Energy Engineering Region. It's meant to monitor environmental data, but for players, it's an item necessary to Ascend their characters.
Subdetection Units are bug-like robots, so they're small and can be hard to locate. Fortunately, just like other similar-shaped local specialties like Onikabuto and Scarab in Genshin Impact, they won't disappear even if they're hit, so players can't accidentally remove them. Travelers will receive 4560 Credit Coupons after exploring and completing all the Fortress of Meropide's tasks in Genshin Impact.
Subdetection Unit Locations In Genshin Impact
Subdetection Unit was released in Genshin Impact 4.1, so it doesn't exist in the first area of Fontaine. Similar to other local specialties, Subdetection Unit respawns after 48 hours. Over 70 are available in the open world, so at least three farming journeys are required to get 168 items a character needs.
Use Elemental Sight to ease the process of locating the small robotic bug.
Liffey Region Route
For the Liffey Region Route, follow this direction:
- Start at the Statue of the Seven and find four Subdetection Units in the area. No need to go downstairs as all of them are on the same level as the Statue of the Seven.
- Use the Teleport Waypoint north of Mont Esus East and head north to the tower where In Search of Lost Time quest can be triggered. Two Subdetection Units are by the stairs in front of the tall tower, while the other two are behind the tower. Go to the lowest part outside the building, and they should be there, near a red camera, a shovel, and a bag.
- Head back to the same Teleport Waypoint and walk southeast. Go to the small island and pick one Subdetection Unit near Genshin Impact Lumitoile.
- Cross the water to get two of the local specialties flying near a torch. Next, climb up the cliff to the small ruins and get two more Subdetection Units; one is flying near a table and some books, while the other is across it, floating near a stack of books.
New Fontaine Research Institute Route
Teleport to the western Waypoint of the New Fontaine Research Institute area, then get three Subdetection Units to the west, and two to the east. Afterward, go back to the Waypoint and head south to find one Subdetection Unit and another in the southeast. Next, head north to the tall tower and find three more of the local specialties; one is by the stairs to the building, one is near the stairs by the door, and the other is at the side of the building and can be reached by climbing the wooden ladder.
For the next route, use the Waypoint to the south and get two Subdetection Units by the bridge. One is hidden behind a breakable object near the wall, while the second is at the end of the bridge. Then, head east to get one robot beetle at the base of the hill.
Up next, head to the New Fontaine Research Institute Waypoint in the north to get five Subdetection Units in the following spots:
- Get one by the entrance of the building (top-right pin).
- Climb the broken walls to the highest floor and find the northern Subdetection Unit by the ledge (top-left pin).
- Go out of the building and get one Subdetection Unit (bottom-right pin).
- Go to the lowest part of the structure and get two of the local specialties (bottom-left pin).
After that, walk east to get two Subdetection Units by a broken cart before heading north.

- The robot beetle is near the building, on the west side.

Use the Teleport Waypoint to the east and head north to the tall tower to get two Subdetection Units. Keep in mind that this building will only be accessible after completing the In Search of Lost Time quest in Genshin Impact. Afterward, move again to the Teleport Waypoint to the east and go south to get one Subdetection Unit on top of some boxes by the shore. Cross the shore to get three of the robot bugs around a broken boat.
Mary-Ann Memorial Park Route
Teleport to the Waypoint south of the Fontaine Research Institute of Kinetic Energy Engineering Region Statue of the Seven, then glide north to the broken waterway to get two Subdetection Units. Afterward, glide north some more to get another beetle under the bridge-like ruin.

Use the Teleport Waypoint north of the Experimental Field Generator boss, then visit the following spots:
- Walk down the stairs twice and get one Subdetection Unit near a broken bookshelf and some books.
- Go down once more and get another one under the broken path.
- Climb back up and capture the bug near the stairs.
- Head back to the Waypoint and walk west on the same level to get two Subdetection Units.
Head west to the next building and get two Subdetection Units on the top floor of the structure, then glide west to the broken bridge to get two more.
Underground Subdetection Unit Locations In Genshin Impact
After progressing through Unfinished Comedy, use the Teleport Waypoint north of the Abandoned Production Zone and head west along the road to find two Subdetection Units.
Enter the Kuisel's Clockwork Workshop, then progress through the Road to Singularity quest in Genshin Impact so that players can:
- Get two Subdetection Units in Kuisel's Clockwork Workshop: Entrance.
- Take two more in Kuisel's Clockwork Workshop: Middle Level.
- Claim three Subdetection Units in Kuisel's Clockwork Workshop: Lower Level. The one in the middle and top requires players to go even further down.
Enter the Abandoned Laboratory where the Treacherous Light of the Depths quest in Genshin Impact is available, then:
- Catch four Subdetection Units in the Abandoned Laboratory: Ruins.
- Get three more in the Abandoned Laboratory: Lower Ruins.
Non-Respawning Subdetection Unit Location
Teleport to the Waypoint east of the Fontaine Research Institute of Kinetic Energy Engineering Region Statue of the Seven, then go northeast to a Hilichurl camp. Enter the building and destroy the wooden boxes to obtain five Subdetection Units. This location does not respawn and can only be claimed once.
