Genshin Impact has a large pool of characters that can form several teams for different needs throughout the story. The roster has also opened up doors for Genshin Impact to come up with fun game modes, like Genius Invokation TCG, which incorporate the characters' skills and other elements. Most recently, the HoYoverse title introduced the "Exercise Surging Storm" event in Version 5.2, which is its version of an auto-battler.
Genshin Impact's Exercise Surging Storm lets players engage in "wargames" using various units with different abilities and traits they can use to beat their opponents. During the preparation phase, players will choose the strongest units to deploy on the battlefield, and the units fight automatically until the opposing team falls. This auto-battler is only a limited-time event, but a recent Genshin Impact leak teased that HoYoverse might turn the auto-battler into a permanent game mode, like Genius Invokation. Considering the size of the current roster, this might just be the natural progression for the game.
Genshin Impact Version 5.5's Leaked Changes Are a Godsend for Artifacts
Ahead of Genshin Impact’s 5.5 update coming in March 2025, several leaks reveal major changes and improvements coming for Artifact farming.
Genshin Impact's Rumored Permanent Auto-Chess Battler Could Make the Most of Its Characters
In a report shared by prominent HoYoverse leaker HomDGCat, Genshin Impact's rumored auto-battler might come out in Version 5.6, and is said to have PvP and PvE elements featuring exploration and combat gameplay. Players could reportedly power up their characters using equipment and Artifacts, and they could sell the items to get currency for leveling up their units' talents. It's still unknown which Genshin Impact characters and how many of them will be featured in the new mode, but it might likely follow a similar format to the Exercise Surging Storm event and other popular auto-battler titles, like Riot Games' Teamfight Tactics.
Auto-battler games require players to strategize their actions and engage in automatic combat with other players in the lobby. They have to choose the best team compositions and items to power up their characters. In each round, players also have to make sure to fortify their teams, activate the right characteristics, equip the right items with the right units, and choose the ideal power-ups, so they can survive until the end of the game. In Teamfight Tactics, Riot Games maximizes League of Legends' large pool of champions and even its diverse skin lines to go with different set themes. The gameplay mechanics and strategies also switch up with each themed set to give players more variety.
Genshin Impact has nearly 100 characters and counting, and many players are likely not using the majority of the roster, either due to the ever-changing meta or simply because of their preferred playstyle. Although HoYoverse hasn't officially confirmed the auto-battler mode, it could be the natural progression for Genshin Impact to fully maximize their favorite characters and their abilities in a different format. At the same time, they could create powerful and unexpected team-ups, especially with characters that they might not be familiar with.
If the rumored auto-battler is anything similar to the Exercise Surging Storm event, where players can choose different units and Strategems to strengthen their teams in 10 rounds of wargames, then Genshin Impact is already off to a great start in terms of the basics. It could still retain the event's mechanic of random players facing each other in battle. Plus, since it's said to have PvE elements with exploration, it could either add "creep" rounds, or rounds where they face NPC monsters to get additional items and coins; or it could feel like Honkai: Star Rail's Divergent Universe when choosing the next route to take before engaging in wargames.
The possibility of a Genshin Impact auto-battler is exciting because it gives fans a new game mode to participate in outside main quests. Just like the Genius Invokation TCG, it's likely that the rumored auto-battler will be built into the original game, but if it becomes successful, Genshin Impact could consider making a standalone title for it to encourage potential players to dive into its lore.
