Genshin Impact is introducing World Level 9 in Version 5.0, and the new difficulty mode comes with a major increase in the number of ascension materials dropped by bosses and other enemies. Since launch, Genshin Impact was made with the following progression in mind: each character would cap out at Level 90, each account could only reach Adventure Rank 60, and World Levels stopped at 8. Though players have long wondered if the developers would ever expand the progression system in Genshin Impact, Natlan has ample evidence that they strongly considered it.
Though a majority of sources lean towards there being no level cap increase in Genshin Impact, it was previously believed that HoYoverse was planning a new Ascension Rank for characters that would have taken them all the way to Level 100. While this concept was either scrapped, delayed, or perhaps even a delicate piece of misdirection, there is one change in progression that Genshin Impact is committed to: the introduction of World Level 9 in Version 5.0.

On top of releasing three new characters in Version 5.0, Genshin Impact is also introducing a myriad of features and improvements: streamlined bounties, a better profile system, and customizable artifacts – to name a few. However, the new World Level has garnered a fair bit of interest from players, and thanks to HomDGCat, the drop rate increase has finally been pinpointed. Compared to the current cap, players can expect to see a 50% increase in ascension materials at World Level 9. The source also confirms that all world bosses will now drop three materials, with a low chance of dropping four, which should make leveling up characters in Genshin Impact far less cumbersome.
Genshin Impact Is Introducing World Level 9 in Version 5.0
Adding a new World Level to Genshin Impact is arguably the least controversial change that HoYoverse could have made to its progression system, as the game allows players to roll back their World Level if the content proves to be too difficult. Whereas introducing a new Ascension Rank for characters would have come bundled with an even bigger grind, the new World Level instead allows players to shorten the existing grind by tackling more difficult foes.
It should be noted that an Adventure Rank of 58 is required to even unlock World Level 9. Besting a Local Legend in Genshin Impact under the new difficulty will now yield up to 24 ascension materials, and defeating enemies with a high drop rate will give up to 10 ascension materials. This should make farming Handguards and Spectral cores significantly easier, though it remains to be seen how HoYoverse will balance new content around this increase.
