Genshin Impact will eventually hit a fork in the road regarding what future updates will bring to the game after the current storyline concludes. However, aside from major content updates, Genshin Impact still has an obvious path to walk when it comes to introducing smaller additions to the game, namely adding more alternative outfits for the playable characters, considering how many characters there are who don’t yet have an outfit.
As of phase two of Genshin Impact’s 5.0 update, there are currently 87 playable characters in the game. Meanwhile, less than two dozen characters have received an alternative outfit. Consequently, Genshin Impact has a massive road ahead of itself before it will ever catch up to having an alternative outfit for every playable character in the game, but it’s never too late to get started.

Lately, Genshin Impact has a habit of adding new character outfits as part of big, in-game events, which is a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, some of these new outfits have been available for players to earn by participating in these events with no purchase necessary, which is fairly generous. Additionally, these events in Genshin Impact justify these new outfits with a significant occasion. New outfits in the game don't all need a lore-accurate reason to exist, but regardless, associating new outfits with an in-game event memorably marks the occasion. On the other hand, this has turned out to be quite a slow process, with Genshin Impact’s release schedule for new characters far outpacing the release schedule for new outfits.

Out of all the playable characters that are currently in Genshin Impact, including the censored character reskins, only 18 out of 87 of them have an alternative outfit. Considering how Genshin Impact is constantly adding new characters with every update, this disparity will likely get worse before it gets better. Needless to say, Genshin Impact has a lot of catching up to do before an additional outfit is available for every playable character, so HoYoverse’s release schedule for character outfits in Genshin Impact is arguably due for a change.
Genshin Impact has the Perfect Blueprint for Adding New Character Outfits
Over on the HoYoLab community hub, players are constantly sharing custom cosplays and artwork that reimagines Genshin Impact’s characters in new outfits and styles. So naturally, HoYoverse could celebrate this fun hobby by holding official design contests for future character outfits in Genshin Impact. This could ideally help to speed up Genshin Impact’s release schedule for new character outfits, while more importantly recognizing the community’s talent and passion for creating art inspired by the characters in Genshin Impact.
Genshin Impact adding new outfits for the playable characters has been a welcome addition to the game so far. As such, it’s reasonable to assume that HoYoverse will continue to add new character outfits to Genshin Impact, except at a much slower pace than fans are content with. Going forward, Genshin Impact should consider doubling down on its release schedule for new outfits, and inviting the community for the chance to collaborate on future outfits sounds like a golden opportunity.
