Over the past few years, Epic Games has distinguished itself not just for its triple-A titles, but for the collective attitude and irreverent outlook of the people behind the label. At a speech given during this year’s GDC Cliff Bleszinski, the face of Epic Games revealed that he is very interested in packing as many Easter Eggs as he possibly can into Epic’s upcoming shooter, Gears of War 3.

After seeing the tremendous increase in gamer awareness that Bulletstorm received after its red ring of death Easter Egg was revealed, Bleszinski knew that his next title not only needed to include Easter Eggs, but that there needed to be an inordinate amount of them.

Easter Eggs, while not a make or break proposition for a popular video game title - especially one as anticipated as Gears of War 3 - can entice gamers to explore every nook and cranny of the world crafted for them.

Beta access or pre-order exclusives are still going to be top dog when it comes to convincing a gamer to pick up a title, but giving them an incentive to take in the sights certainly makes the developers’ work feel appreciated.

On top of announcing his intent to pack as many Easter Eggs as possible into Gears 3, Cliff also revealed that some of them would be so hard to find that Epic would potentially have to leak their location themselves. Apparently nobody told Blezinski that hordes of gamers are already planning to dedicate every waking hour to this game anyways.

"The second after Bulletstorm came out, the front page of Kotaku and all these [gaming] websites was the Red Ring Of Death secret. That's your hidden X-factor to extend the launch of the game. So now I'm running into our office like, 'Dude. Easter Eggs, Easter Eggs. Pack 'em in, pack 'em deep."

All this talk of Gears of War 3 has certainly put the title on gamers' minds, always a good thing especially with a beta right around the corner. Hopefully showcasing the newly implemented level progression and Epic’s use of dedicated servers, the beta could help to wipe away any sadness caused by Gears 3 being delayed into fall of this year.

It isn’t going to be just the Easter Eggs or the multiplayer that sells the complete Gears 3 package, but a combination of every element. Let us hope they all come together spectacularly for an experience that lasts well into 2012.
