It’s been nearly five years since The Coalition released the last mainline Gears of War game, with Gears 5 in September 2019. Fans have long desired to see what The Coalition would do for the Gears franchise with the power of the Xbox Series X. Players finally had their questions answered at the 2024 Xbox Showcase with the announcement of the next mainline Gears game in the form of the prequel Gears of War: E-Day.

However, new rumors and job listings have hinted at more than just the Locust breaking new ground with E-Day’s upcoming release. These new details may hint at a possible PlayStation 5 release for Gears of War: E-Day, a first for the series.

Recent Xbox Exclusive Ports and Rumors for PS5

Ever since Microsoft announced in February 2024 that four previously Xbox-exclusive titles would be released on PS5 and the Nintendo Switch, players have become both worried and excited about the potential of being able to play some of Xbox’s greatest hits on other consoles. In this first wave of ports, 2023’s Hi-Fi Rush and 2018’s Sea of Thieves were announced to come to the PS5, while 2022’s Pentiment and 2020’s Grounded would come to both the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty claimed the decision to bring these exclusives to other consoles was to grow their communities and bring players together.

Following these releases, more rumors of other celebrated Xbox exclusives coming to the PS5 have appeared, such as a Halo: Combat Evolved remake and now Gears of War: E-Day. In regard to E-Day, this rumor began with a June Microsoft Careers job listing at The Coalition for a Senior Online Client Engineer. Among the job’s qualifications are a bachelor's degree in computer science, over two years working with matchmaking systems, and a preferred qualification of “Experience with Xbox Live, PSN, Steam, or other online gaming platforms.” No other Coalition job listing mentions PSN specifically, instead looking for experience with Xbox Live or other online gaming platforms.

Gears of War has never been released on PlayStation consoles before, but Gears 5 and Gears Tactics can be played on Steam, with Gears of War: E-Day listed as coming soon on the PC storefront.

Gears of War: E-Day's Potential on PS5

While the mere mention of looking for someone with experience on PSN doesn’t necessarily confirm a PlayStation Gears of War release, there is a lot of potential for the franchise to come to Sony consoles. From a business standpoint, it could help boost E-Day’s sales, especially if many players abandoned the series after its five-year-long absence. With E-Day being a prequel set at the beginning of the Locust War, it could prove to be the perfect jumping-on point for new fans on the Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam to delve into the war-torn world of Sera. Depending on when E-Day is released, it could further serve as a test to see how Xbox’s most prolific franchises perform on other consoles.

In terms of multiplayer, Gears of War: E-Day on the PS5 could bring one of the most popular PVP and PVE multiplayer systems to Sony players. If crossplay is enabled between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, a PS5 release could make E-Day one of Gears of War’s most populated games in the entire series. Having E-Day’s multiplayer on the PS5 could further revitalize Gears Esports with potential new athletes from Sony consoles, as well as potentially increase fan viewership.

Gears of War’s PlayStation Potential Beyond E-Day

Gears of War: E-Day on the PlayStation 5 may help boost E-Day sales, but it could help bring other past Gears of War games to the Sony console. For several years now, rumors of The Coalition developing a Marcus Fenix Collection of presumably all prior mainline Gears of War games have appeared similar to Halo: The Master Chief Collection. If this rumored compilation turns out to be true and comes out after Gears of War: E-Day on PS5, it could help allow PlayStation players to easily experience the rest of Marcus Fenix’s story without having to buy an Xbox or PC.
