News from Nintendo has been relatively quiet lately, especially considering that the absence of events like E3 this summer has left the usual rush of game reveals a little lax. However, a possible new leak from GameStop may imply that there may be some new announcements for the Switch on the way from the gaming giant.
The news, originally posted through Switch Brasil, an independent Nintendo reporting site localized to Brasil, has begun to spread quickly, appearing on Reset Era and gaining traction. Of course, as is the nature of leaks and rumors, this news can be taken with a grain of salt, but with events like the Nintendo Treehouse Stream already passed, this could give fans an insight on what to expect from the company in the future.
From what this latest rumor shows, it would seem that three new SKUs or Stock Keeping Units, essentially product identification numbers for retailers, have appeared for the Switch at GameStop. The release dates are also set to December 31st, a common placeholder date for a product that doesn't have an announced release date or window yet. So, these new SKUs may be for new games coming to Switch in 2020 or as far forward as 2021, but these likely will have less to do with recently announced titles like Paper Mario: The Origami King which has a confirmed release date.
In addition to the new SKUs, the leak also came with a screenshot of an internal document from within GameStop that implies that there will be maintenance regarding these new products on July 14th. During the maintenance, digital sales for games on Nintendo consoles will be suspended, which lends credence to the rumor that Nintendo is planning some sort of announcement or the next Nintendo Direct at that time with new games becoming available for Pre-Order afterwards. What exactly these games will be is still yet to be determined, but there already a number of games coming to Nintendo consoles in 2020.
While seeing new SKUs for Switch pop up can be exciting for fans to rally behind and raise some excitement in the community, since none of this information can be confirmed by official statements, it should be regarded with a hint of caution. This could be anything from the announcement of a new Mario or Zelda title, to a special edition for the previously announced Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia that is set for release in November.
