It’s these streamers’ recent interest in Suika Game that revived this 2021 title. Since its comeback, it has been released worldwide and downloaded over four million times. S uika Game itself is a derivative of a Chinese web game named Synthetic Watermelon. As such, suikalike games that are direct clones are pretty easy to find. But there are bubble merging and match two puzzle games with fun twists to the formula worth picking up.

1 Synthetic Watermelon

The Original Suika Game

合成大西瓜 or Synthetic Watermelon came out on WeChat in January. It was released months before Aladdin X came up with the demo with similar mechanics to Synthetic Watermelon. Although Suika Game appears remarkably similar to it, Synthetic Watermelon still has marked differences from Aladdin X’s game.

Synthetic Watermelon has a “deeper” floor and no visible upper limit until the player is an inch away from it. Its fruit physics is a little more grounded, which means bouncing fruits are not an immediate concern. What players do have to worry about are fruits rolling in place, as these can push other fruits to the side.

2 Watermelon Game: Monkey Land

Cute monkeys dance on either side of the fruit screen in Watermelon Game: Monkey Land. Fruits also have different expressions at times, and special effects liven up the screen to motivate players to keep going. Ads are also placed in optimal positions to avoid any accidental presses.

Otherwise, it has similar gameplay and physics to Suika Game. Cute fruits merge when players drop them on a similar type and flying fruits can ruin runs. What’s remarkable is that part of the interface looks more similar to Synthetic Watermelon, which makes it feel a little less constrained by its play area.

3 Threes

Match Three Instead Of Two

A puzzle game from 2014, Threes is available on browsers and mobile phones. Unique to Threes is the mechanic of 1 and 2 having different mechanics from numbers 3 and above. Players can add 1 and 2 by sliding them together against a wall or tile.

Although the UI is simple, 1024 is similar in gameplay to the Taito classic Bust-A-Move. Bust-A-Move, known as Puzzle Bobble in Japan, and 1024 use colors and guidelines to help players line bubbles up. However, 1024 is free to play and exclusive to iOS with a purchasable ad-free option in-game.

5 SuiCats

Who doesn’t love cats? SuiCats certainly does, as it replaces fruits with various types of cats. As a proper suikalike, players must match two cats of the same size to make a bigger cat. In this case, the biggest cat is a tiger-striped yellow cat, while the smallest is a white-gray kitten.

Although it’s a straightforward suikalike, SuiCats has 20 achievements dedicated players can unlock. Most achievements are linked to unlocking different cat types. Harder achievements, some of which have only been unlocked by 0.1% of players, are tied to ultra-hard skill feats.

6 Holo No Suika

As expected by anyone who pays attention to the vtuber agency Hololive, a fan made a version featuring its talents. Named Holo no Suika, fruits are replaced by cute chibi versions of various Hololive members. Game mechanics are the same as the original, as players need only match the same members together.

It’s not inaccurate to say that Suika Game is what 2048 would have looked like if it had fruits instead of numbers. In fact, some eagle-eyed gamers pointed out that the watermelon game was similar to 2048 in concept when it gained notoriety.

Released for free in 2014, 2048 was a simple web game where players must slide numbered tiles on a 4 x 4 grid. Numbers merge if two tiles of the same value slide together. Players must get a tile to 2048 to “win” the game, though they can continue playing for a higher score after their conditional win.
