Getting powerful in a game is usually a slow burn. You level up, you find some slightly better gear, you feel a bit tougher. But some games go far, far beyond that. They let you reach a point where you are not just strong, but godlike. A point where the enemies that once made you sweat and curse barely even register as obstacles, where the entire world just seems to bend under your sheer, incredible weight.

This isn't your friendly neighbourhood superhero origin story. No. This is something else entirely. Something monstrous. The result is a protagonist who can leap up the sides of skyscrapers, sprint faster than a speeding car, and morph his own arms into giant, razor-sharp blades or city-block-levelling hammers.

The sheer genius of Prototype is in its beautiful, chaotic escalation. The early missions will have you sneaking around, experimenting with disguises. But before you know it, you're hijacking tanks with a single punch and diving into entire crowds of civilians just to consume them for a quick health boost. It's a messy, glorious, unapologetic power trip.

Delsin Rowe. Just a regular guy, until he discovers he has the incredible, and incredibly dangerous, ability to absorb the powers of other "Conduits." And that's when he becomes a walking, talking arsenal of elemental chaos. What starts with simple smoke powers quickly, beautifully evolves into neon, then video, and even concrete manipulation.

The narrative leans right into the fantasy, giving you the choice to be either a rebellious, graffiti-tagging hero or a ruthless, power-hungry villain. But no matter which path you choose, by the time you've unlocked multiple powers at once, the city feels less like a challenge and more like a beautiful, sprawling canvas for your own personal fireworks display.

This game is defined by one thing: Scale. Sheer, unbelievable, jaw-on-the-floor scale. By this point in Kratos' epic, blood-soaked saga, the vengeful Spartan has already defied death multiple times. But here? Here he goes to war against the gods themselves. And the opening battle alone, which is fought on the back of the Titan Gaia as she climbs Mount Olympus, just sets the tone perfectly.

Skyrim is not shy about letting you become a literal demigod. At first, sure, a couple of wolves or a few grumpy bandits can probably take you down. But you are the Dragonborn. And with every new level, every new spell, and every new enchanted weapon you find, you are pushed further and further towards this state of absurd, game-breaking strength. And then you add in the Shouts, the ability to literally bend reality with your voice, and the world just starts to bend to your will.

What makes Skyrim's power curve so special is how open and freeform it feels. You can be an archmage, a master assassin, a heavily-armoured warrior... Or you can be all three at once. By the time you’re shouting dragons from the sky while wearing a suit of Daedric armor that regenerates your health faster than your enemies can even damage you, the sense of ascension is just... Absolute.

This game starts with you as the President of the United States. And it somehow, some way, still finds ways to make you even more powerful and ridiculous from there. Once aliens trap you in a computer simulation, you gain a whole suite of superpowers that make things like cars, guns, and even physics itself feel completely, utterly irrelevant.

Saints Row 4 commits fully to the excess. Sure, guns still exist, but when you can drop from orbit like a human meteor or blast your enemies with a gun that shoots dubstep waves, firearms just feel like quaint, old-fashioned relics. It’s not just a game about being powerful; it’s a game that is actively laughing at the very concept of limits.
