In a new interview with James Hibberd, author of the tell-all Game of Thrones book Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon and award-winning journalist for The Hollywood Reporter, George R.R. Martin shared how he truly feels about House of the Dragon and its showrunner, Ryan Condal. Despite picking Ryan Condal himself to bring the Dance of the Dragons to life, George R.R. Martin has been left deeply unsatisfied in the fallout of HotD Season 2.
Emilia Clarke Slams Game of Thrones Ending 'It Comes Out of Nowhere'
Daenerys actress Emilia Clarke said, "You’re highly unlikely to see me get on a dragon, or even in the same frame as a dragon, ever again."
According to Martin, their relationship began strong in House of the Dragon Season 1. "I thought Ryan and I were partners. And we were all through the first season. I would read early drafts of the scripts. I would give notes. He would change some things. It was working really well — I thought." Unfortunately, things took a sour turn for Martin as Condal's creative liberties spiraled out of control in House of the Dragon Season 2.
House of the Dragon Showrunner Ryan Condal Kept Changing George R.R. Martin's Story Against His Wishes
When asked about his current working relationship with Ryan Condal, George R.R. Martin pulled no punches. “'It’s worse than rocky,' Martin says, looking miserable. 'It’s abysmal.'” Martin revealed that Condal stopped listening to him entirely once Season 2 of House of the Dragon began production. "I would give notes, and nothing would happen. Sometimes he would explain why he wasn’t doing it. Other times, he would tell me, ‘Oh, OK, yeah, I’ll think about that.’ It got worse and worse, and I began to get more and more annoyed.'"
George R.R. Martin Reveals He’ll Write More Game of Thrones Stories ‘If I Have The Time’
GRRM confirmed "there’s more stories to tell about Dunk and Egg, and their education, and what’s going to befall them in future years."
George R.R. Martin's relationship with Ryan Condal deteriorated so much, HBO eventually stepped in to handle all discussions with the Houes of the Dragon showrunner. "It got to a point where I was told by HBO that I should submit all my notes to them and they would give Ryan our combined notes.” Ryan Condal notably refused to comment when The Hollywood Reporter reached out regarding George R.R. Martin's latest interview, but he is on record telling Entertainment Weekly, "I made every effort to include George in the adaptation process... He just became unwilling to acknowledge the practical issues at hand in a reasonable way."
George R.R. Martin Does Not Stand Behind House of the Dragon Season 3
The real breaking point for George R.R. Martin's relationship with Ryan Condal seems to stem from a Zoom call with HBO where the team went over their plans for House of the Dragon Season 3. According to James Hibberd, "The purpose of the call was for Condal to present his vision for season three. After Condal spoke, Martin detailed his many objections." George R.R. Martin is on record saying, "This is not my story any longer."
Game of Thrones’ Kit Harrington Never Wants to Play Jon Snow Again ‘God No’
Kit Harrington is done playing Jon Snow, and with the Game of Thrones series for good – " I spent 10 years doing that. Thanks, I’m alright."
For as much as Game of Thrones changed while adapting A Song of Ice and Fire for screen, George R.R. Martin never outright disowned the series. The fact that Martin is comfortable sharing that House of the Dragon is no longer the story he wrote speaks to a seriously fractured relationship between himself and Ryan Condal. For die-hard A Song of Ice and Fire and Fire & Blood fans, this can only mean House of the Dragon Season 3 will be unrecognizable from George R.R. Martin's original novel.
