Modern Fantasy Shows To Watch If You Miss Game Of Thrones

Still pining over the best days of Game of Thrones? These new fantasy shows have the potential to fill that GoT sized gap in fans' lives.

However, George R. R. Martin's worldbuilding is incredibly detailed, to the point where continents and other locations outside of Westeros have also been fleshed out. Some notable characters from Game of Thrones hail from outside of Westeros, yet end up being just as critical and beloved as the ones born on the series' main continent.

8 Shae

Tyrion Falls In Love With This Lady From The Free Cities

  • Birthplace: Lorath
  • Played By: Sibel Kekilli

Given how wary Tyrion is regarding his emotions, it's nice to see him open up from time to time. After forming a connection with Shae, he proclaims his love for her and tries to help her feel like she belongs in his life, even if she may be a courtesan who is looked down upon by royalty.

After he finds himself smack-dab in the middle of a political conspiracy, Tyrion pretends to hate Shae so that she doesn't find herself in harm's way. Instead, his jilted lover decides to testify against Tyrion in court, putting her in the Lannisters' crosshairs. Tyrion then strangles the woman he loved after finding her in his father's bed.

7 Talisa Stark

Her Charms Win Over Robb

  • Birthplace: Volantis
  • Played By: Oona Chaplin

Talisa had an epiphany in Volantis after a slave saved her brother. She refused to live in a place where people could be treated like objects and worked tirelessly to educate herself as a healer before moving to Westeros.

After a chance encounter with a wounded Robb Stark causes sparks to fly between them, Talisa and the King in the North wed against the wishes of Catelyn and House Frey. This turned out to be a fatal mistake, since Walder Frey was so incensed that he decided to ally with the Lannisters and betray House Stark at the Red Wedding.

6 Daario Naharis

A Soldier Whom Daenerys Became Enamored With

  • Birthplace: Tyrosh
  • Played By: Ed Skrein (Season 3), Michiel Huisman (Seasons 4–6)

Daario Naharis is a suave soldier who wins over Daenerys with his charm and beauty. She can't help but be drawn to the warrior, eventually sparking a romance with him that gets under Jorah's skin.

5 Grey Worm

The Leader Of The Unsullied Swears Fealty To Daenerys

  • Birthplace: Summer Isles
  • Played By: Jacob Anderson

Grey Worm was one of the members of the Unsullied who had resigned himself to a life of slavery. However, Daenerys freed him and the rest of his fellow soldiers from their shackles, allowing them to serve her of their own will instead of being forced into the role.

This earned Daenerys Grey Worm's loyalty, and he became one of her trusted soldiers and advisors. After seeing Missandei, the woman he'd grown to love, decapitated under Cersei's orders, he has no problems carrying out the Sacking of King's Landing when Daenerys officially transforms into the Mad Queen.

4 Missandei

A Former Slave Who Becomes Daenerys' Advisor

  • Birthplace: Naath
  • Played By: Nathalie Emmanuel

Another slave who was freed from her life of servitude because of Daenerys, it didn't take long for Missandei to win over the Mother of Dragons and become her handmaiden. She was upgraded to the role of an advisor who used her wealth of local knowledge to guide Daenerys whenever required.

She was the voice of reason tying Daenerys down, which is why witnessing her death at the hands of the Mountain broke the Queen for good. Her rage didn't subside even when Cersei surrendered, causing her to murder thousands of innocents in the Sacking of King's Landing.

3 Melisandre

The Red Woman Mystified Everyone With Her Powers

The Game of Thrones franchise spawned several video games that fans should check out if they haven't already.

2 Khal Drogo

Daenerys' Husband Was A Powerful Khal

  • Birthplace: Dothraki Sea
  • Played By: Jason Momoa

Khal Drogo introduced viewers to the savagery of the Dothraki, even though he eventually developed a tender spot for his Queen. He was a fearsome warrior who became the Khal and refused to show weakness, which eventually came back to bite him.

After a treatment gone wrong, Drogo's wound became infected, and he passed away. Mirri Maz Duur, the woman responsible for this ill-timed death, was burned at the stake, and as Daenerys stepped into the fire, she took her first step as the rightful Queen of Westeros.

1 Varys

A Smart Advisor Who Wanted The Throne To Be In Capable Hands

  • Birthplace: Lys
  • Played By: Conleth Hill

Varys is one of the smartest characters in Game of Thrones. He endured a horrid time as a slave child, and was eventually sold to a deranged sorcerer who numbed his body but kept his sensation of pain intact as he castrated him.

Varys eventually escaped and used his wily ways to become a street-smart urchin who was ultimately seen as fit enough to become King Robert's spymaster. Unfortunately, the writers forgot how clever he was when he started advising Daenerys, causing him to make an out-of-character mistake that led to a fiery execution.
