Over the years, FromSoftware has built its reputation on challenging, oftentimes even grueling, single-player titles that boast fascinating worlds rich with mysterious lore. FromSoftware is one of the most well-respected developers in the industry, and gamers saw the studio reach a new high with Elden Ring back in 2022.

The expectation was that FromSoftware's next project would be another single-player adventure. However, the developer shocked everyone last year at The Game Awards by announcing Elden Ring Nightreign, a multiplayer spin-off. Then, in April, the multiplayer title The Duskbloods was confirmed for the Switch 2. While this one-two punch of multiplayer games may be frustrating for some FromSoftware fans, the wait for a new single-player story may not be as long of a wait as expected.

Elden Ring Nightreign and The Duskbloods May Not Be the Only Projects FromSoftware Has in the Works

  • Elden Ring Nightreign launches May 30.
  • The Duskbloods is slated to arrive sometime in 2026.

It's important to note that FromSoftware has not confirmed any new single-player games currently in development. However, that doesn't mean that there isn't one in its early stages. FromSoftware tends to announce projects when a significant amount of work has been completed, and that means there could be a fresh single-player story currently waiting in its infancy. Elden Ring Nightreign is just around the corner, while The Duskbloods is only a year away, and this actually bodes well for eager single-player lovers.

Elden Ring won Game of the Year at the 2022 Game Awards. Nightreign and The Duskbloods now open the door for a potential Best Multiplayer Game nomination.

Hidetaka Miyazaki Has Reassured Fans That Single-Player Games Will Continue

FromSoftware's Miyazaki recently made sure to address fans' concerns regarding a potential permanent shift for the studio. On the Nintendo Creator's Voice blog, Miyazaki stated, "The Duskbloods is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward. We still intend to actively develop single-player-focused games."

This doesn't necessarily mean that a new single-player game is right around the corner, but it does at least reassure fans that FromSofware has no intention of moving away from the style that has become its bread and butter. After the massive success of Elden Ring, it makes sense for the studio to want to experiment and see what else it's capable of creating beyond its formula.

Instead of Elden Ring Nightreign and The Duskbloods being the new norm for FromSoftware, they merely seem like pit stops along the way to the next single-player title. Theoretically, a new single-player soulslike could be ready by 2027 if FromSofware is working on anything under the radar. This is purely speculation, but when putting it into that perspective, it makes the wait seem a little less daunting.

A live-action Elden Ring movie has been confirmed. A24 is set to produce, while Alex Garland has been hired to direct.

Elden Ring Nightreign and The Duskbloods Show a Different Side of FromSoftware

While it would be great for another single-player soulslike to be on the way, it's also going to be incredibly intriguing to see how FromSoftware's new approach takes off. The developer could have easily stuck to its guns, but expanding its horizons into a new genre is compelling. Only time will tell if Nightreign and The Duskbloods are successes for FromSoftware, but once the two multiplayer titles are here, it will be exciting to see what the developer has planned next.
