This post contains spoilers for Frieren.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a true gem that will go down in the history books as one of the best anime ever. The series is proof enough that action doesn't need to be the focus to become universally adored. The story, characters, and world-building are more important for an anime's success.
Following an amazing first season, fans were eagerly waiting for the subsequent installment. Most were certain that Frieren's second season would be just as good and that it would continue to build on the momentum. When Frieren Season 2 began airing, it became clear that the anime was adhering to its standard. However, there was one small thing that upset fans—the episode count.
Frieren Season 2 Only Has 10 Episodes
Not long before the premiere of season 2, reports began circulating that pointed to it having a significantly low number of episodes. Ultimately, it was revealed that Frieren's second season would only have 10 episodes, a reduction of 18 episodes. Naturally, fans were shocked to learn about the episode count, but they trusted Madhouse to deliver a splendid adaptation regardless.
Based on the episodes so far, it is safe to say that Madhouse hasn't disappointed, and it has delivered yet another phenomenal adaptation. Despite the positivity around the new episodes, there is one thing that fans have to get used to, and that is a long time without any fresh Frieren. That's right, once Frieren Season 2 finishes airing, there will not be any new content for an extremely long period.
Frieren Manga Is On An Indefinite Hiatus
The Frieren Manga Went On A Break in 2025
- The manga's break will affect the anime
- The Frieren anime will not return for a long time
Anime-only fans may not have a clue, but the Frieren manga is actually on an indefinite break. It started in October 2025, and so far, there have been no new updates regarding its return. It has been revealed that both Kanehito Yamada (author) and Tsukasa Abe (illustrator) have been struggling with their health, which is why the manga was put on a break.
The news of the duo's health is hardly surprising, as it is quite common in the manga industry. Every year, a new author is revealed to have health issues because of the time and effort they put into creating the manuscripts. Eiichiro Oda and Yoshihiro Togashi have been dealing with these problems for years. The latter, in particular, has been suffering health complications for a long time, causing him to shelve the Hunter x Hunter manga.
Everyone had lost hope of the manga's return, but Togashi did not stop fighting, and even now, he is working on new chapters for the manga. The point here is that whenever people work on a manga for years, they are bound to develop these issues. Hopefully, Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe take all the time they need to recover before coming back. As a result of the manga's indefinite hiatus, the anime cannot release too many episodes, as it would risk getting dangerously close to the manga. So, until the manga comes back, Madhouse won't announce a new season of Frieren either.
Frieren fans Can Watch Other Anime As They Wait For Season 3
Since Frieren's return is uncertain, fans should try not to worry about it. Instead, they should enjoy the second season and then try watching anime that are similar to Frieren. Some of the titles fans can stream are:
- One Piece
- The Apothecary Diaries
- Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
- Kingdom
- Cowboy Bebop
- Mushishi
They may not be a like-for-like replacement, but their quality is unmistakable. So, fans can keep themselves busy while they wait for the series to come back.
Frieren Can Finally Win Anime Of The Year
As fans may remember, the first season did not win Crunchyroll's Anime of the Year, as it lost to Solo Leveling. Many anime fans considered it a travesty, as they believed Frieren was superior in every way. Thankfully, there is a genuine chance that the new season could end up winning. However, Frieren aficionados will have to wait for a long time, as the second season isn't eligible for the 2026 awards. Hopefully, things will change at the 2027 awards.
