San Diego Comic-Con has delivered a weekend of exciting news updates for pop culture fans, and the horror community received a thrilling announcement regarding the future of the Friday the 13th franchise, with confirmation of a new movie and video game. Held in San Diego, California, the multi-genre event has been ongoing since 1970, originally catering to comic books and science-fiction media. Lately, the con has become one of the largest conventions in the world and a hot spot for movie and TV announcements as well as Marvel and DC reveals, and horror is making an impact this year with the Friday the 13th IP being a highlight.
The Friday the 13th IP has delivered 12 slasher films and evolved to produce television series, novels, comic books, and video games since its debut on the silver screen. The story follows Jason Voorhees, a character thought to have drowned at Camp Crystal Lake, who returns to ignite a series of killing sprees. The franchise has also been making waves after a new Friday the 13th attraction was announced at Universal Studios, where fans can explore the iconic summer camp in person that’s synonymous with the slasher IP.
Friday The 13th: Best Films In The Series, Ranked
The Friday the 13th series has its ups and downs, shifting between almost comical to good campy killings. These are the best movies in the series.
Reported by Bloody Disgusting, Horror Inc. Vice President Robbie Barsamian announced that a new sequel movie and a new sequel game were “at the top of our list.” Barsamian continued, “It’s where most of our energy’s going right now. And I can tell you finally we’re in a position to deliver on that. While we’re not officially announcing with our partners today, both are coming. They’re both in the works and they’re both coming.” Friday the 13th: The Game’s servers were shut down in December 2024, and gamers of a horror persuasion also lost Evil Dead: The Game this year after the title was delisted.
New Friday the 13th Sequel Movie and Game Announced at San Diego Comic-Con
Friday the 13th: The Game was an asymmetrical survival horror released in 2017 and developed by IllFonic. Despite the game’s recent shutdown, enthusiasts were thrilled to hear that San Diego Comic-Con was delivering a first-look at a new Jason Voorhees figure, based on the killer’s appearance from Friday the 13th: The Game, which came as a surprise to players.
Before the details of the new movie emerge, fans have the Crystal Lake prequel slasher series to look forward to, developed by Brad Caleb Kane, who is, unexpectedly, the singing voice of Disney’s Aladdin. The series will be set before the events of the original self-titled film from 1980, and the series is produced by one of the most recognizable production companies catering to unique horror projects today, A24. Jason’s mother was recently cast in Crystal Lake, portrayed by a Marvel and The Curse of La Llorona star, and youngster Callum Vinson was later brought on board to play a young Jason in the prequel.
