Freddi Fish Is Making a Comeback

On February 29, Freddi Fish will be swimming onto the Nintendo Switch eShop in Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds, marking something of a resurgence for this icon of 90s computer entertainment. In 1992, developer Humongous Entertainment opened and eventually released some of the most popular computer games from that era, with Backyard Sports, Spy Fox, and Freddi Fish. Now, years later, one of Humongous' classics is getting attention once again on the Nintendo Switch.

This is not the first comeback for Freddi or Humongous. In 2015, the Humongous Complete Pack and Freddi Fish Complete Pack were sold on Steam, and later, some games were introduced to the Switch with eShop releases and the Humongous Classic Collection, which was given a physical copy with Limited Run Games in 2022. These games may be receiving such widespread attention once again out of nostalgia, a need for quality family-friendly gaming, or both, and Nintendo happens to be a great space for either.

Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds will see a Nintendo Switch release on February 29. Players will "Help underwater detective Freddi Fish solve the case" all "in an effort to save the reef." The game is voice-acted with color-coded subtitles matching each character and showcases visuals that easily inspire nostalgia for their time. Advertising 40 different places and 500 secret click points, the game encourages the idea that players take their time and inspect everything in front of them as they make their way through one of many Freddi Fish adventures.

Perhaps one of the biggest appeals for this game's introduction to the Switch is the ability to take it on the go. Players invested in the story used to have to wait to get back home to play these point-and-click games, and likely had to wait their turn on shared family PCs, but with the portability of the Switch and Switch Lite, these games could be a great way to pass the time.

There's a chance that a brand-new audience will discover what made these games so popular in the first place. Many of the gamers who grew up playing Freddi Fish are old enough to have raised families of their own, including children whom they want to introduce to gaming. This way, the game will likely pick up sales from those who know and appreciate educational kids' games, but there is also a chance that players who have no prior connection will become curious about these games the same way they did in the '90s.
