Foxhole is a unique MMO inspired by both World Wars and features persistent wars that can last weeks or even months, never going offline. There are two factions, the Colonials and the Wardens, and players must commit to a side for the duration of a war. Choosing whether to play as a Colonial or Warden in Foxhole is, therefore, a big decision, especially as these sides are asymmetrical, with different strengths and weaknesses.

How Factions Work In Foxhole

Foxhole - Faction Selection Screen - Wardens & Colonials

There are two factions in Foxhole, and the Wardens and Colonials are always at war with one another.

How Are The Factions Different In Foxhole?

Other than the Wardens being blue and the Colonials being green and having different aesthetics, there are other, more important differences. Each have their own lore, and the Wardens typically start in the snowy north, while the Colonials start in the south.

They also have their own unique weapons, vehicles, and other types of equipment. This means that each faction has distinct advantages and disadvantages. For example, the Wardens have a better submarine, but the Colonials have a superior aircraft carrier. In some cases, one side has something that the other doesn't have at all. An example from the Airborne update is that Wardens have a torpedo bomber, whereas the Colonials have a dive bomber.

Don't worry too much about balance, which is impossible to objectively assess. Instead, think about what sounds more fun.

Vehicles and equipment also have to be unlocked via a tech tree each war, and players dictate what is unlocked first for their faction.

When Can You Switch Faction In Foxhole?

Players must commit to one side for the duration of the war, but when a new war starts in the future, players are free to choose again.

There are two caveats to this. Players can switch if they have played less than 6 minutes of the current war. After 6 minutes, they will be locked to that faction. Additionally, players below Level 5 have a one-time ability to switch factions. This is there in case new players want to play with their friends or for similar reasons.

If you're in a regiment, you are forced to join their faction. To switch at the start of a new war, you must first join and, within 6 minutes, leave the regiment via the menu accessed by F1. Then exit and switch factions.

Different Shards/Servers

To accommodate the large playerbase, there are often two servers, called shards, in Foxhole. These are Able and Charlie, with Charlie being recommended for new players or those who haven't played in a while.

Each has its own wars. For example, Able's war might last 3 weeks, with a new war starting a few days later. Meanwhile, Charlie's war might last for over a month.

Importantly, players can choose different factions on these shards. This means you can play as a Colonial on Able and a Warden on Charlie.

Foxhole: Easiest Ways To Help The War Effort

As the large persistent wars can feel overwhelming at first, the following are the best ways for beginners to help in Foxhole.

Key Factors For Choosing A Faction

The following are the most important factors to consider when choosing a faction in Foxhole.

  • Which faction currently has a lower population, meaning shorter queues? Factions at capacity are shown in red.
  • Which faction aesthetics do you prefer, including uniforms and vehicle designs?
  • Which half of the map do you prefer starting in?
  • Which faction rank names do you prefer?
  • Which faction are your friends playing as?
  • Which faction has regiments you prefer the sound of?
  • The war record, which, before the Airborne update, is 69-62 in favor of the Wardens on Able.
  • Time zones, as there may be more American Colonials and more European Wardens.

There are more uniforms to check out for both factions. These include scout, medic, paratrooper, grenadier, pilot, and navy uniforms. Check these out to see which you prefer, although they won't always be available given their functional value.

Feel free to try both sides out across multiple wars or stick to one forever as a loyalist. There's no right or wrong. Some players only ever play one faction or will switch every now and again, while others see themselves as neutrals, always alternating.

The Colonial Faction In Foxhole

The Colonial Legion is the army of the Mesean Republic, and they fight in green. Their wartime aesthetic is similar to Britain and the US in World War 2, along with some Italian inspiration from the same era. This includes khaki uniforms, gun designs, green tanks and planes, which are all sleek. Colonial ships are also light grey and angular. The Colonial war machine is also said to rely on mass production.

Some of the standout Colonial weapons and vehicles are:

  • The Argenti Rifle
  • The Catara LMG
  • The Bomastone Grenade
  • The Lunaire Grenade Launcher
  • The Spatha Tank
  • The Strider Medium Boat
  • The V-1 Tyzkalia Heavy Bomber
  • The Poseidon Aircraft Carrier

Dominant. Unrelenting. No army in the world holds a candle to the Mesean Colonials. So, when northerners marched on our border, it ignited a flame that refuses to be snuffed.

If they want to test our legions, let them try.

For the end, is our glory.

Colonial Lore

The Mesean Republic comprises a few nations, such as Mesea, Veli, and Kraunia. These nations and the faction as a whole are inspired by Rome, Greece, and France.

The Mesean Republic is militaristic and very much focused on the state as a collective, rather than individuals. Although not too much is known about the religion of the Republic, they appear to worship a pantheon of gods, similar to those of Ancient Rome and Greece.

The Warden Faction In Foxhole

The Warden faction in Foxhole is the army of Caoiva, and they fight in blue. Their uniforms seem to hold some resemblance to those of wartime France and Germany, and the dark grey of their tanks and ships seems to speak of the harsh north. With the Airborne update, however, their planes are light blue, tying in more with the faction's main color. Their vehicles as a whole have a more unique design, often with few comparisons to real World World War 1 or 2 history.

Some of the standout Warden weapons and vehicles are:

  • The Loughcaster Rifle
  • The Booker Assault Rifle
  • The Outlaw Tank
  • The Nakki Submarine
  • The Man-of-War Torpedo Bomber

Warden Faction Selection Screen Quote

The Caoivish built an empire out of the cold treacherous north, but the Great Wars have taken a toll on our once proud nation. Those southern savages left our home shattered and broken.

It's not just our home they threaten, but our history, our legacy.

Take it back.

Warden Lore

While not officially an empire, Caoiva is a collection of nations and clans, brought together by the legendary Iain Callahan. Their culture is loosely based on Gaelic and other Celtic cultures. They are led by an Archon, almost always from the Callahan or Mercy clans, chosen by the Witan.

Unlike the Mesean Republic of the Colonials, the Caoivish place a strong emphasis on legendary individuals from their history and the present, which is evident in naming customs with two map hexes named Callahan's Passage and Mercy's Wish, for example. In this part of the world, the Sun is worshiped.
