A new horror FPS called Fossilfuel 2 has strong Dino Crisis vibes, and it has already gained positive reviews soon after its release. Dino Crisis is among the most beloved of Capcom’s forgotten franchises, and its fans will be glad to know that this new indie game could be considered its spiritual successor.

Dino Crisis was originally released back in 1999, and it became a cult classic over the years. Essentially playing like Resident Evil with dinosaurs, the game received two direct sequels and one spin-off, but it was eventually forgotten by Capcom in the mid-2000s. Fortunately, some indie games such as Fossilfuel and its sequel Fossifuel 2 are continuing the legacy of this abandoned franchise.

Described as a “dinosaur survival horror” by its developer, DangerousBob Studio, Fossilfuel 2 was released for PC and Xbox Series X/S last week. The game’s story is set in a mysterious research facility in Alaska, in which players will have to solve puzzles, explore non-linear, interconnected environments, and fight dinosaurs to survive. The story campaign has multiple endings depending on player choices, and it takes around 12 hours to beat, according to the devs. Fossilfuel 2 also comes with a Horde Mode for people who are just into combat and a Sandbox Mode for players who want to use their creativity.

Fossilfuel 2 Release Trailer

Despite being a somewhat unknown game from a small studio, Fossilfuel 2 currently has Positive reviews on Steam, with 93% of 44 people enjoying it. In some of the reviews, gamers describe Fossilfuel 2 as “playing like an FPS Dino Crisis,” and define it as one of the best dinosaur games out there due to its exciting gameplay and having “a lot of heart.”

While Capcom has yet to release a new Dino Crisis, at least players can find indie games inspired by the franchise. Released last year, Dinobreak is a Dino Crisis-inspired game made by Dead Drop Studios. Aesthetically, the title is even more similar to Dino Crisis than Fossielfuel 2, as it plays in third-person with a fixed camera. Unfortunately, its reviews are not as positive, as only 68% of the reviewers considered it a good game on Steam.

Another Dino Crisis-like game is the upcoming Instinction, which is being developed by Hashbane Interactive. The game is eagerly awaited by dinosaur fans, and it could help revitalize the dinosaur horror genre if it’s successful. Hopefully, this new wave of Dino Crisis-inspired indies could convince Capcom to give the franchise a shot once more.
