Summary
- Fortnite has introduced three new game modes, each one being an entirely new game inside Fortnite, and they are apparently here to stay.
- The LEGO Fortnite collaboration is a major success, with a high player count and engaging survival mechanics.
- However, there is a missed opportunity with the lack of official real-world LEGO Fortnite sets, despite rumors and leaks suggesting their development.
While Fortnite had already cemented itself as the hub of all things pop culture, crossing over with countless movies, TV shows, and fellow video games over the last few years, it's entered a new, unprecedented era that makes that all look like just a small footnote in Fortnite's already-lengthy history. Announced at the start of Fortnite Chapter 5, the battle royale game has gotten a handful of new game modes, though they're far more important and impressive than any limited-time game modes Fortnite has ever had before.
Over the last week or so, Fortnite has added three new game modes, each one being essentially an entirely new game inside of Fortnite, and all apparently here for the long haul. There's Rocket Racing, a new kart racer made by Rocket League's devs. There's Fortnite Festival, created by Rock Band studio Harmonix. And finally, there's LEGO Fortnite, the most exciting of the bunch. A survival mode heavily inspired by Minecraft and LEGO Worlds, LEGO Fortnite has been a major success for Epic Games already, with its player count being higher than the battle royale mode for a while this last weekend. But while this crossover is one of Fortnite's finest, it still feels like there's one big thing missing.
A Perfect Successor For LEGO Fortnite is Already Obvious
LEGO Fortnite has already become a massive success, but a collaboration with another building franchise could be an even bigger hit.
Fortnite's LEGO Crossover Is Still Missing a Key Ingredient
Fortnite's LEGO Crossover Is More Than Just Another Mode
Fortnite has had plenty of limited-time modes over the last six years, and while some of these have been pretty fun, they all pale in comparison to the new LEGO Fortnite collaboration. Apparently here to stay, at least for as long as it's popular, LEGO Fortnite sees players embark on an open-world survival adventure with their friends, where they can cut down trees, harvest resources, fight enemies, and build a slew of different structures, all while in LEGO minifigure form, and all while using LEGO weapons and building blocks.
As Fortnite's official Twitter posted just a few days ago, this LEGO Fortnite collaboration isn't being viewed as just some extra mode, but an entirely new game that just happens to be inside of Fortnite, and that's definitely how it feels when playing the mode. From entirely new assets to hundreds of LEGO minifigure versions of Fortnite skins to some really engaging survival mechanics, LEGO Fortnite is the real deal, and along with the rest of Fortnite's new mode, it paints a bright future for the battle royale title.
Fortnite's LEGO Crossover Needs Real-World LEGO Sets
But while LEGO Fortnite is undeniably one of the game's greatest collaborations, there's one glaring missed opportunity, and that's the lack of any real-world LEGO Fortnite sets. This LEGO survival mode in Fortnite has been rumored, teased, and leaked repeatedly over the last year or so, and every step of the way it's come right alongside the rumors that LEGO is also making some real-world sets based on the battle royale and its most iconic characters.
But Fortnite's LEGO crossover is in full swing, and there's been no mention of any official real-world LEGO sets based on the game. The only hint of a real-world LEGO Fortnite set is an online set of instructions for a LEGO Loot Llama that Epic Games made publicly available the other day, though eager fans will need to source their own LEGO bricks if they want to build it themselves. It may be the case that LEGO was waiting to see how the crossover mode would be received, and now that it's a major success, it might have some sets ready and waiting in the wings.
