Fortnite has come a long way since its release way back in 2017. It started as one of the battle royale games created to rival the popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, but it has evolved into something much larger than that. While its gameplay remains mostly the same, Fortnite has become the poster child for video game collaborations. Its latest crossover with Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* is a testament to that reputation, as it came with some cool cosmetics and a fun mini tournament.

This Thunderbolts collaboration is one of many Fortnite-Marvel Studios crossovers. It started with The Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup, which let players transform into Thanos and gain extra powers and an improved health pool. The event was so popular that Marvel continued to turn to Fortnite for video game promotions for its mainline movie releases, with remarkable examples being the Endgame Limited Time Mode (Chapter One), Deadpool (Chapter Two), Spider-Man (Chapter Three), and the latest Thunderbolts* bundle and BR Cup event in Chapter Six.

Fortnite’s Thunderbolts Collaboration Turns Marvel’s Newest Heroes into Comic-Style and Lego Cosmetics

The Thunderbolts are Marvel’s newest superhero team, consisting of what seems like a bunch of misfits and anti-heroes. It was recently revealed that this team is set up to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s New Avengers. Its cast contains some returning characters, like the villain-turned-hero-turned-congressman Bucky Barnes and the former Red Room operative Yelena Belova. Both characters feature as purchasable cosmetics in Fortnite.

Bucky and Yelena Drop into Battle Royale With Pen and Ink Skins

Fortnite uses different art styles for its skins. Some of the anime cosmetics have cel-shaded styles to mimic their look in their respective shows. Meanwhile, some of the superhero skins feature a pen and ink style, which makes them look straight out of a comic book. The game started implementing this style during its Deadpool and Wolverine collaboration skins. This look was so well-received by fans that people started making fan art of their favorite Marvel heroes in Fortnite’s pen-and-ink style in the hopes of getting a similar skin in the game. Some of them got their wish with the release of Winter Soldier and White Widow’s Thunderbolt* collaboration cosmetics.

  • Winter Soldier: Bucky dons his all-black garb with brown boots and utility harnesses. His chrome arm is exposed, and players can opt to wear this skin with Bucky’s mask on or off. This look is more similar to his costume in Captain America: The Winter Soldier than his current Thunderbolts* outfit.
  • White Widow: Yelena is decked out in an all-white jumpsuit with blue accents from her utility harnesses and boots. She also has her signature stingers. This doesn’t look like her current Thunderbolts* uniform, and it may be inspired by her costume in White Widow (2023) issue #4. Players can also toggle her goggles on or off.

These White Widow and Winter Soldier skins also come with Lego versions, which look adorable. They also come bundled with other cosmetics, like:

  • Weapons: Winter Soldier’s Armament Axe and White Widow’s Fangs
  • Back Bling: Winter Soldier’s Spare arm and White Widow’s Pack
  • Emotes: Arm-up (featuring Armament Axe) and Widow’s Mac

Fans got a chance to win the White Widow skin by participating in Fortnite's limited-time Thunderbolts* Cup back on April 25. This was a one-day Battle Royale tournament wherein the duo with the most points in each region got to unlock the White Widow outfit early and for free. Those who earned 40 points got the White Widow Wrap, while those who got at least eight points got the Winter Soldier Wrap. Players who missed out on the event can get the Thunderbolts* bundle, which includes all the skins, emotes, weapons, and Back Blings, for 2,800 V-Bucks ($22.99 US). Meanwhile, the individual Winter Soldier and White Widow skins cost 1,500 V-Bucks ($8.99 US) each.
