Epic Games multiplayer shooter Fortnite has already redecorated its map once today. The Season 7 content update introduced the frozen biome, which gave the map a suitably chilly makeover just in time for winter. But that's not all; at The Game Awards 2018, Epic revealed yet another new addition to the game's map.
In a surprise presentation at The Game Awards, Epic unveiled a new Fortnite area called The Block. The Block replaces the Risky Reels movie theatre, flattening it and putting a grey concrete surface over the top.
While The Block is far from the prettiest area in the game, this is for good reason. Epic plans to use the new location to highlight what the Fortnite community has made in the new Fortnite Creative mode. Every player will get to see these creations once they've been placed on The Block, explained Fortnite's worldwide creative director, Donald Mustard.
Although players often focus on getting incredible eliminations and making use of the game's new items and weapons, building is the key to succeeding in the game. So, it only makes sense for Epic to show that off, giving a shout out to the community that keeps coming up with new and even more impressive ways to make use of these building features.
As for how these showcase-worthy creations will be chosen, Epic will take submissions through Twitter, tagged with #FortniteBlockParty. The submission guidelines are listed below:
- 25x25 tile area on a flat section of your island.
- Try to keep your ‘Memory Used’ less than 50,000.
- Chests, floor loot, and vehicle spawns will be determined by Epic. No need to include these.
It's unclear exactly how Epic Games will decide who deserves a spot. The developer does look to social media for suggestions on what to add to the game next and to identify bugs and technical issues within its game. Lucky fans have even received replies from Epic on Reddit. As such, getting a spot on The Block could just be a case of campaigning about it on social media.
Epic also hasn't disclosed how often the content featured on The Block may be refreshed. Epic may just switch out creations when it feels as though it has found something else worth shining a light on. But, given that Fortnite has 200 million players around the world, players could potentially come up with worthy content on a daily or even hourly basis. It's an interesting feature, but there are some questions that still need to be answered.
Fortnite is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS devices.
