Fortnite broke another one of its records this week, after pulling in massive amounts of players during the month of November. This recent resurgence in Fortnite's popularity is largely due to its Chapter 4: Season OG update.

Fortnite's Season OG, which was released on November 3, brought back many features from the game's initial peak of popularity in 2018. This update was a massive success, bringing in a record amount of players to Fortnite's Save the World mode in addition to catapulting its battle royale mode back to the top. A plethora of features from the "OG" era of Fortnite have returned, including weapons, items, and the game's original map. The update has been a huge hit with old and new fans alike, leading Fortnite to reach even higher levels of popularity.

Fortnite looks to maintain its popularity going into December 2's in-game live event, The Big Bang, which will usher in Fortnite's next chapter beginning on December 3. It's still unclear how many of Season OG's features, if any, will remain in Fortnite following its approaching updates.

The overwhelming success of Season OG has put the game's developer, Epic Games, in an unexpectedly tough position regarding Fortnite's future. Its throwback to 2018 Fortnite has proved so popular that Epic may damage the game's current popularity if it removes Season OG's features to make room for new ones. And on the other hand, the possible solution of keeping Fortnite OG as a separate mode, while continuing to implement new seasons, might only divide the player base and damage the game's longevity.

While the massive success of Season OG presents an interesting problem for Epic, the developer has earned its reputation of being a consistent, competent games studio that will probably find a workable solution. Leaks have already been made regarding Fortnite's approaching Chapter 5 update and its crossovers, which will reportedly feature Snake from Metal Gear and Peter Griffin from Family Guy as earnable skins.

While Epic hasn't confirmed the removal of Season OG's features yet, an established leaker claimed that Epic has no plans to keep Season OG's content going into Chapter 5. Although this would be a disappointing reality for Season OG fans, it makes sense given Epic's long-term vision for the future of Fortnite. The game has earned its reputation of being one of the most well-run live-service games ever, and permanently keeping Season OG's iteration in the game might not fit Epic's established strategy.
