What began as a simple take on the newly emerging battle royale genre has become one of the biggest juggernauts of the entire gaming industry. Fortnite is no longer just a free-to-play game, it's an entertainment phenomenon, crossing over with countless properties to create a playable smorgasbord of pop-culture. From My Hero Academia to Star Wars to other games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Halo, Fortnite is a hub for the world of entertainment, and it's about to get its newest crossover: The Witcher's Geralt of Rivia.
The main protagonist of The Witcher franchise, Geralt of Rivia is a white-haired, yellow-eyed mutant that hunts down The Continent's most dangerous monsters, and slays them for coin. Geralt certainly isn't Fortnite's first video game crossover, nor is he even the first crossover character to come from an adult-themed game, but his inclusion in Fortnite is a little different to the likes of Kratos and Master Chief. Where those character skins could just be bought for a handful of V-Bucks, unlocking Geralt will require a little more effort.
How Geralt Will Work in Fortnite
Teased at the end of Fortnite Chapter 3's finale event, Geralt of Rivia is set to join the rest of Chapter 4 Season 1's Battle Pass in just a few weeks' time. This latest Battle Pass has already seen Doom's brutal protagonist the Doom Slayer join the fight, with players being able to unlock the hero by simply leveling up the Battle Pass. Geralt, on the other hand, might take more work to unlock.
According to Fortnite's in-game clock, Geralt of Rivia will come to the game on February 7 2023. If players navigate their way over to Fortnite's Battle Pass page, they should be able to find and click on Geralt's tab. Here, players can see all the Witcher-themed rewards they'll be able to unlock. There's a loading screen art that depicts a particularly spooky-looking Geralt staring right back at the player, a Backpack Bling that slings the Witcher's iconic swords across the player's back, a spray, an emote that sees the player cast the Igni Sign, a Witcher sword harvesting tool, and the main skin itself is based on Geralt's iconic look from The Witcher 3.
Interestingly, there's a second section of rewards on this page, filled with another line of cosmetics that have been replaced with question marks. These mystery items are set to release three weeks after the initial set of Witcher-themed goodies, meaning they should arrive right at the end of February. While these rewards remain a complete mystery, it seems pretty likely that they'll also follow the Witcher theming. The most likely scenario is that these additional rewards are souped-up versions of the standard Witcher rewards, such as an alternate look for Geralt, a new Sign emote, and another harvesting tool based on a different sword design from the game. Alternatively, these yet-to-be-revealed rewards could offer something new, such as a Yennefer or Triss skin, and other cosmetics to go along with it.
To unlock these rewards, players will likely have to complete a unique set of mission objectives, with a certain number needed to unlock the main Geralt skin. This system will be all too familiar to long-time Fortnite fans, with this being the way the Indiana Jones skin was unlocked in Chapter 3, and the way the Mandalorian skin was unlocked back in Chapter 2. Geralt's missions will likely involve objectives themed around The Witcher, such as visiting themed locations, collecting themed items or weapons, or possibly even defeating some unique NPC monsters that could appear around the island.
Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and mobile devices.
