Fortnite has officially unleashed its annual Fortnitemares event. The Halloween update has already proven to be a hit with players thanks to the major changes it has made to the Battle Royale mode in particular. Besides new locations and Halloween-themed weapons, one crossover character has had quite the impact on the Fortnite island.
For several years now, Fortnite has used Fortnitemares as an opportunity to collaborate with popular horror movie franchises. Frankenstein's monster, Ash Williams, Michael Myers, and other genre icons have boarded the battle bus in past Octobers. Fortnitemares 2024 is continuing this trend by adding Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Billy the Puppet from Saw. Both series are surprisingly violent for a game as family friendly as Fortnite, but for horror fans, this is a cause for celebration. Unlike last year's Halloween event, this year's collaborations aren't just relegated to the shop. Alongside a usable chainsaw in the Fortnite loot pool, Saw's mascot has brought a bombastic new mythic item for players to torment each other with in Battle Royale.

What is the Boom Billy Mythic?
The Jigsaw Killer is known throughout the Saw franchise for his deadly traps and overly complex revenge schemes. Apparently craving violence on a multiversal scale, he has sent a few of his signature toys to the Fortnite island, allowing players to follow in his demented footsteps. With this October update, John Kramer's favorite puppet can not only be worn thanks to a Saw-themed cosmetic bundle but can take to the skies thanks to the Boom Billy mythic.
How to Use the Boom Billy Mythic
The item is a miniature Billy the Puppet complete with tricycle. Thanks to an attached sawblade propellor, players who collect a Boom Billy can lob it into the air just like they would a grenade. The cute little killer will roam an area until it detects an enemy. Once it has a target in sight, the Boom Billy will pursue the unsuspecting victim. If the Boom Billy gets within range of an enemy player, it will detonate and deal 75 damage to anyone in the vicinity — minus the user's teammates. Each Boom Billy has a single charge, and a player can only send out two of these items at once. Paired with the War Machine auto turret, this update has made it even easier to detect and attack foes before even realizing that they're there.
How to Obtain a Boom Billy
There are multiple ways for players to find the Boom Billy mythic on the island. The easiest way to get one of these weapons is to happen upon one while searching a chest. However, since the loot in chests is randomly determined, it isn't guaranteed that a player will find a Boom Billy this way. For those looking for a more sure-fire — albeit more dangerous — way to get their hands on this explosive puppet, there are two other routes that can be taken during a match.
If players are willing to risk life and limb, they can complete Jigsaw's Challenge at Restored Reels, Grim Gate, The Underworld, Nitrodrome, or Freaky Fields. Successful players will automatically be rewarded with three Boom Billys alongside some other Halloween-themed loot. Speaking of Freaky Fields, this new location is home to yet another way to obtain a Boom Billy. Upon investigating the TV in the old farm house, an axe-wielding Billy the Puppet boss will be spawned. Beating this Billy grants players three more Boom Billys and completes a Fortnitemares quest worth 20,000 XP.
Boom Billy and the Future of Fortnitemares
While some fans were disappointed to not have physical Jigsaw traps on the island, the Boom Billy is still a step in the right direction. Fortnitemares 2023 was criticized for making minimal changes compared to previous years. A majority of that update's content came in the form of purchaseable cosmetics and returning loot pool items like the pumpkin launcher. The Fortnitemares 2024 event's addition of the Boom Billy mythic shows that Epic is not only able to push itself when it comes to the maturity of its collabs, but hopefully when it comes to adding unique items to future Fortnite Halloween events as well.
