Five Nights at Freddy's fans will get exactly what they came for if the terrifying teaser is anything to go by. The direction of a movie based on a game that terrorizes players with possessed animatronic animals could have gone anywhere. However, luckily it looks to stick close to the spirit of the popular video game.
The basic concept of the iconic Five Nights at Freddy's video game features a night shift security guard at a Pizzeria, who later is terrorized by the iconic Freddy Fazbear, the evil animatronic, until the morning. Five Nights at Freddy's is an independent horror game that gained worldwide popularity among gamers of all ages, so it seems fitting for the next generation to be introduced to the game through the upcoming Blumhouse Productions movie, which released its first teaser trailer that promises a faithful adaptation.
The Five Nights at Freddy's teaser opens with an introduction video that plays for the new security guard, which gets him and the audience accustomed to Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, a restaurant akin to Chuck E Cheese. The recording displays a version of reality so perfect that it can’t help but be creepy in its own right. The security guard is then shown walking around the property. However, the terror of the night does not start until he turns the power on, sparking scenarios similar to Saw. Due to the game’s popularity among individual gamers and streamers, some fans anticipate that a few individuals may somehow participate in the film. Markiplier is a well-known YouTuber who popularized the game and its sequels with his playthrough. Markiplier played coy when discussing Five Nights at Freddy's, so it can be speculated that he might be involved in some fashion.
Jason Blum, the founder of Blumhouse Productions, shared a set photo from Five Nights at Freddy's in February when filming began. However, at that point, it was under the working title of “Bad Cupcake,” likely to avoid word getting out before the production was ready to market the movie. Five Nights at Freddy's will release in the fall, but fans currently have a teaser and promotional image to stew over while they wait for the official trailer, which is undoubtedly on the horizon between now and then.
There have been multiple graphic novels, books, and games for Five Nights at Freddy's, but this will mark the first time that the franchise will be represented by a feature-length movie, which is sure to bring in new audiences that are likely to propel the franchise into future games and even more multimedia content. The sky is the limit, which depends on Five Nights at Freddy's capitalizing on its passionate fan base and general audiences.
The Five Nights at Freddy's movie will release on October 27, 2023.
