The latest installment in the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit, surprised fans with an early release last night. The Five Nights at Freddy's franchise hit its tenth anniversary today, August 8, and was originally expected to celebrate with the release of a brand-new game. However, after an accidental early release in Japan, the game was made available on Steam yesterday, one day ahead of the official anniversary.
Five Nights at Freddy's, created by Scott Cawthon, was first released in 2014 as a 2D point-and-click style horror game. Players must survive five nights as the new nighttime security guard of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Since then, the FNAF franchise has expanded exponentially, with eleven main games, eight spin-off games, a novelized trilogy, a series of short stories, and a feature film that was released last October with a sequel expected for a 2025 release. It has become one of the most popular horror games, attracting a fanbase of children and adults and helping launch the stardom of several online streamers.
Every Five Nights At Freddy's Game, Ranked
No matter how one feels about the original game and its many sequels, it seems fair to say that FNaF has forever changed the indie horror genre.
The latest Five Nights at Freddy's game, Into the Pit, is based on the short story of the same name, the first to be released within the Five Nights at Freddy's novel series. It was originally expected to be released on August 8 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the franchise, but was accidentally released ahead of schedule in Japan. Because of this, the developers decided to release the game completely, making Into the Pit fully available last night, August 7. It is currently available on Steam for $19.99.
Five Nights at Freddy's Franchise Continues to Grow 10 Years Later
Into the Pit takes the franchise back to its 2D roots, with players sneaking around the pizzeria to try and hide from the threats lurking in the shadows. Players will travel back and forth in between different time periods to piece together clues and try to defeat the animatronics. In addition, the game is available in hard and casual mode, and different minigames throughout the main story can unlock different endings.
Five Nights at Freddy's also announced another new game to be released in 2025, Secret of the Mimic, which is expected to reveal several secrets about the franchise and take players into the past to learn more about the infamous pizzeria and its animatronics. Dead by Daylight also announced a new collaboration with FNAF, which will likely bring some of the more popular characters to the DBD universe, although not much else about the collab has been confirmed at this time.
With FNAF reaching ten years as an iconic horror franchise, it seems clear that it has no intention of slowing down. Now, with dozens of novelized stories to pull from and another feature film coming, there may be no shortage of material to be adapted into some form of gameplay. While Secret of the Mimic and the DBD crossover will not be available until next year, fans can find Into the Pit now available on Steam.
