Five Nights at Freddy’s was a surprising hit in 2023. The film turned the series of children’s horror games into a narrative, following Josh Hutcherson as Mike, a security guard at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. Mike is haunted by the disappearance of his younger brother and is simultaneously hunted by the animatronics within the Pizzeria, who come alive at night with murderous intentions. Five Nights at Freddy’s rated poorly with critics, scoring just 32% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, however, it received the opposite response from audiences. The movie grossed almost $300 million at the worldwide box office, making it Blumhouse’s highest-grossing worldwide release ever. Naturally, a sequel was inevitable.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Poster Officially Revealed
Blumhouse recently held a showcase at New York Comic-Con 2024, which included some new details about Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Most importantly, Blumhouse released the first poster for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, restating its release date of December 5, 2025, and hinting at a new character in the sequel. The poster showcases a giant number '2' alongside the face of an animatronic partially hidden behind a red curtain. The distinct plastic design of the animatronic is different from those of the animatronic characters introduced so far, and many quickly recognized the face as belonging to Toy Freddy.
Toy Freddy Will Make Live Action Debut in Five Nights at Freddy's Sequel
Introducing Toy Freddy in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 means the sequel is following the trajectory of Scott Cawthon’s game franchise, which also introduced the character in its second game. The second FNAF game followed a similar structure to the first, with the player tasked with stopping the haunted animatronics from breaching the security office. However, the player also gained some new skills in the second game to help them survive, one being a Fazbear mascot head that allowed them to blend in. The plot of the game remained simple, with the player controlling a new security guard named Jeremy Fitzgerald, who goes up against a new and enhanced set of animatronics.
The ending of the first FNAF movie saw Mike and his younger sister, Abby, solving the mystery of the haunted animatronics, revealing they were possessed by the souls of children murdered by William Afton (Matthew Lillard). The animatronics turned on Afton and left him to die in his animatronic suit, meanwhile, Mike and Abby escaped the collapse of the Pizzeria. While the second FNAF game introduces a new set of characters, the movie has confirmed the return of Hutcherson and Lillard. This means the movie will likely reshape the story of the game to suit the story of its existing characters, but will still add in some of the gameplay elements such as Toy Freddy. Hutcherson hinted at FNAF 2 being a scarier sequel, but it will be interesting to see how far the movie pushes its PG-13 rating after the success of the original.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will be released on December 5, 2025.
