Cast members such as Matthew Lillard and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their memorable roles from the 2023 movie, and it will be fascinating to see what villain William Afton and security guard Mike Schmidt are up to now. Of course, the animatronics are still wreaking havoc, and from the trailer, it looks like they're more dangerous than ever.

As fans wait for the movie's release, they're curious about how different Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be from the first movie. The biggest question on everyone's mind is, will the sequel be more terrifying than the first film? Although fans appreciate the comedic tone of the story, they're hoping for some more scares this time around, especially after the original movie's unnerving ending.

Based on Josh Hutcherson's interview with Esquire in October 2024, it sounds like Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be scarier than the first movie. He said:

“It’s much bigger; the stakes are higher. There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way."

The actor continued:

"I think the fans are gonna flip for it. It’s gonna be a lot of fun with the source. It’s gonna be scarier, too, actually.”

The teaser trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is fun, and since the animatronics aren't contained in the pizza parlor setting anymore, they could be more violent and could kill more people than in the first film. Although of course the pizzeria is still one of the sequel's locations, the second film is branching out and doing something new. Now the characters will likely be even more motivated to stop the animatronics before too much harm is done.

Will Five Nights At Freddy's Be Rated R?

Since Josh Hutcherson said the sequel is "scarier," fans are curious if that means that the movie will have an R rating or be rated PG-13 like the 2023 film. In October 2024, Matthew Lillard gave an interview to Forbes and shared that Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will have a PG-13 rating. He called it "more exciting" with "more action." He also said:

"here's a huge hit movie, you have a feeling they're probably going to make more of them, and I think they do a good job in the second film, making sure that people will want more."

While it might seem like R-rated movies are more terrifying than PG-13 ones, sometimes a PG-13 film can be unsettling. It depends on the setting, tension, and villain.

Why Five Nights At Freddy's 2 Could Be Worse or Better Than Its Predecessor

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 could be both worse and also more exciting than the first movie. On the one hand, it could be better because it has a new setting and it could give fans the fast-paced, frightening story they're looking for. On the other hand, bringing the animatronics out into the world away from Freddy Fazbear's Pizza could change things too much. It's always a risk when a sequel switches things up, but at the same time, it's the wrong move to copy the first movie too much.

While fans will have to wait and see what Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is like when it's released in theaters on December 5th, 2025, the addition of Toy Freddy, a character from the video game, is good news. As long as the sequel has some jump scares, surprising moments, and a solid ending that might lead into a potential Five Nights at Freddy's 3, audiences will likely be pleased.
