Fire Emblem Engage, like many previous titles, allows the player to customize the difficulty of their playthrough, from the overall difficulty of the enemies to if the units they use can permanently die. This has allowed players to challenge themselves in different ways when hoping to start another run of the latest Fire Emblem title.
However, many creative fans of the franchise have taken this one step further in the hope of creating new challenges for themselves in Fire Emblem Engage. From excluding the use of certain units to refusing to use certain features, these are the most challenging ways players can experience Fire Emblem Engage.
8 Classic Mode
Playing the Classic Mode challenge in Fire Emblem Engage is for those that are looking for an authentic experience that attempts to mimic how the original Fire Emblem franchise was played. Luckily for players, this doesn't need a lot of setup as this challenging playthrough can be achieved just by selecting the Classic mode to allow units to die if they lose all their health.
Players can take this one step further by proceeding to increase the overall difficulty of the game by selecting Hard or even Maddening difficulty, which allows the enemies to deal an unforgivable amount of damage to vulnerable units.
7 Zero Deaths Allowed
Playing with Casual Mode may make this challenge obsolete as units will come back the next battle. Combining how every decision counts with Classic Mode as well as the player refusing to allow units to die can make for a stressful yet rewarding playthrough.
Those that are truly looking for a challenging time on Fire Emblem Engage could even select Maddening Difficulty to make it harder to keep units alive. Players could also go as far as to restart the entire game if any unit were to die, though this may get annoying very quickly, and therefore it may be a more pleasant experience to simply restart the battle.
6 Only One Class Challenge
Although each character in Fire Emblem Engage is recruited with their own class, some of which are unique to only them, some players may wish to challenge themselves by facing chapters while only using one type of class. By using Second or Advanced Seals players can transform units into other classes and therefore make their whole team up entirely of one.
What class the player decides to use is entirely up to them from either one of the newly added classes or an old favorite. For an added challenge, players could use a class that has a common vulnerability such as flying units, so more strategy is needed to complete levels.
5 No Heals Allowed
Healers are an incredibly vital part of Fire Emblem Engage. Enemies may catch the player off-guard, which could cause a substantial amount of damage to them and therefore put the unit near death. Usually, a player would use a healer or a Vulnerary to regain some of those hit points.
As the No Heals Allowed name suggests, players will not have these crutches to rely on and must depend on allies that either have high defense or high avoidance to avoid dying in unnecessary battles. Those units that once had staffs can be classed into something else if needed.
4 One Gender Only Run
Fire Emblem Engage has a mix of characters all with their own interesting personalities that players can get to know through support conversations. Both the men and women of the game can carry their own in a fight, especially when using a combination of the two of them. However, players may wonder how they last in combat when deciding to only use units of one gender.
Players are free to swap out classes that may be needed, though for an added challenge, keeping to the original level-up advanced classes of each unit may cause the player to have to consider other strategies for battle.
3 Base Classes Only
Once reaching level ten players can use a Master Seal to advance a character's class into something far more powerful. However, the base classes of characters can be just as powerful as any advanced class as long as the effort is put into improving them.
In this challenge, players must keep all their units as base classes if they wish to use a character they recruit in the late game. These units will need to be transformed into a base class instead. Special Classes such as Thief and Dancer can be removed or used depending on the player's preference.
2 One Unit Playthrough
A near-impossible challenge for players to test their limit is only using one character in every chapter in Fire Emblem Engage. This will most likely be Alear as this character must be present for every single main story mission, though players may wish to use somebody else and make Alear completely defenseless.
Every battle will need countless amounts of strategy planning before starting as it's incredibly easy to get overrun when only using one unit to face many, especially as some stronger units have more than one life.
1 No Emblem Rings
One of the most challenging ways players can enjoy Fire Emblem Engage after a couple of playthroughs of the game is by attempting to complete the entire story without the assistance of the Emblem Rings. This means whenever the player is able to remove the rings from their characters, they should put them away in the vault, never be seen again.
Some gamers may wish to take this further by not even allowing their units to bond with the rings, and therefore they can't unlock other weapon proficiencies or inherit these Emblem heroes' skills.
Fire Emblem Engage is currently available on Switch.
