Summary
- Matt Reeves remains attached to The Batman: Part 2, alleviating concerns about his directorial position.
- First complete script draft expected by Memorial Day 2023 with a focus on independence from the DC Universe.
- Slow writing pace and strict policy have delayed filming, with Robert Pattinson tied up in other projects as well.
In a rare glimmer of optimism for an otherwise troubled production, The Batman: Part 2 appears to still be on course, Matt Reeves firmly attached to the project, and a script on the horizon.
The Batman: Part 2 has faced multiple delays since its 2022 announcement, so much so that even its current release date of October 2, 2027, looks less feasible with each passing week. An unfinished script and reports of Robert Pattinson joining Dune 3, a movie set to shoot this summer—mere months before The Batman Part 2’s supposed filming schedule—stoked fears amongst fans that the movie would never see the light of day.
It's Hard To Say It, But The Batman Part 2 Should Be Put To Rest
Matt Reeves' Batman sequel has turned into an attritional waiting game, which may not be worth it in the end.
An exclusive report courtesy of The Wrap delivers three pieces of news that would excite anyone tracking the development of The Batman sequel. First, that director Matt Reeves has been sending pages for more than six months. Second, the first complete draft is expected to be turned in by Memorial Day (May 26). And third, affirmation that it will remain independent from the newly structured DC Universe. Bringing to the fore a previously underemphasized factor, the report highlights that the five-month Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike (from May 2 to September 27, 2023) significantly impacted the project’s timeline.
Matt Reeves Still Being Onboard To Direct The Batman: Part 2 Is Relieving
His Director’s Seat Has Been In Doubt Throughout Recent Weeks
Of the three, it's the truth that Reeves is still in charge of The Batman: Part 2 that’s perhaps the most relieving. Rumors have been swirling that the austere filmmaker had been booted as director, with some sources citing a personal issue “close” to the seriousness of a “Chadwick Boseman situation” and a Warner Bros ultimatum. A recent Production Weekly issue indicating that Reeves may have withdrawn from the director’s chair of The Batman: Part 2, although still retaining his role as screenwriter, only strengthened these fears. However, just last week, James Gunn reassured on Threads that the filmmaker is very much still attached. Before that, the DC Studios co-CEO previously cited Reeves’ commitment “to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write” as the “only reason for the delay.”
Apart from Reeves apparently being a slow writer, a policy by Gunn and DC co-Head Peter Safran banning a project from moving forward till a script is finalized has ensured that things won’t kick off as swiftly for The Batman: Part 2, despite the current pushbacks. Compare this to Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently filming without a complete script.
It needs reminding that a draft is different from a complete and officially greenlit story. Thus, if Gunn and Safran don’t have a change of heart in their policy, don’t expect The Batman: Part 2 to start filming anytime soon. It won’t either way—Pattinson is currently shooting Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and filming for his return in cape and cowl isn’t due till the end of the year.
