A few months ago the games industry faced what many at the time believed could be the biggest leak in its history thanks to a breach of Nvidia, revealing almost all of the titles listed on its GeForce Now servers. Since then, fans have lost confidence that this leak has revealed numerous secrets from behind the scenes of many publishers as it appears many of the titles listed are placeholders for games that may never come to fruition. However, some titles, such as the PC versions of God of War and Sackboy: A Big Adventure, have seen formal announcements since the leak. Now, a very unexpected title from the GeForce Now leaks, a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics, has appeared on another retailer, indicating that it could be real.
Final Fantasy Tactics was first released on the PlayStation in 1997 in Japan, with a North American release coming later in 1998. The game is a tactical RPG set in the fictional world of Ivalice, a location that would house many future Final Fantasy titles such as Final Fantasy 12. The game was a major spin-off from Square Enix's turn-based RPG series, with a development team led by Ogre Battle creator Yasumi Matsuno, and went on to become a cult classic, with many fans regarding it as one of the best tactical RPGs ever made. The game was followed in 2003 by a Game Boy Advance sequel aptly titled Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, with it itself receiving a Nintendo DS sequel titled Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift. In 2007, Final Fantasy Tactics was remastered for PSP as Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions.
While the series has laid dormant for many years, with Square Enix pivoting away from console-based Final Fantasy spin-offs in recent years to focus on the main series and MMOs like Final Fantasy 14, fans have kept up hope that they would some day return to the land of Ivalice with another tactical RPG. After suspiciously appearing in the Nvidia GeForce Now leak a few months ago, a reference to a mysterious Final Fantasy Tactics remaster has again appeared on digital retailer Instant Gaming, as spotted by ComicBook. This has sent fans spinning in speculation once again with regards to what this remaster could look like, whether it will be just a simple re-release of War of the Lions or a full 3D remake of the PlayStation classic.
Interestingly, the Instant Gaming listing is accompanied by a piece of art and a "2023" release window, meaning the retailer has already provided more than enough material to convince fans that this is something that Square Enix is planning for the coming future. As for when this remaster could be announced, The Game Awards 2021 is quickly approaching, and Square Enix is known to drop news at the event. However, fans should take this leak with a grain of salt for now and keep their expectations in check.
Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster is rumored to be in development.
