Summary
- Final Fantasy Tactics sees support for a new entry, but rumors of a remaster have been dispelled by the creator.
- Even so, there is a desire to make a new entry in the series.
- Final Fantasy Tactics fans may be able to fill the void with similar games like Triangle Strategy and Unicorn Overlord.
Yoshi-P, the producer and director of Final Fantasy 14 and 16, has stated that the Final Fantasy Tactics series deserves a new entry. First released in 1997, Final Fantasy Tactics was released in 1997 as a tactical RPG spin-off, featuring a unique new world known as Ivalice. It received plenty of critical acclaim back in the day and would become one of the Final Fantasy franchise's most lauded spin-off titles. Despite the acclaim it has, the series hasn't had a new entry since the 2007 PlayStation Portable remake of the first game, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.
There were some rumors about a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster following the infamous 2021 Nvidia GeForce Leak, with gaming insiders later seemingly corroborating its existence in early 2023. Despite the circumstantial evidence, Final Fantasy Tactics creator Yasumi Matsuno would later dispel those rumors by stating there were no plans to remaster the first game. Some fans are still hopeful that the series will make a comeback one day, a notion supported by Final Fantasy 14 and 16's producer, Naoki Yoshida, or Yoshi-P.
Games To Play If You Miss Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics fans who want to scratch that same itch should try out these other great games.
In an interview with TheGamer, Yoshida revealed he loves the Final Fantasy Tactics series as much as other fans. Yoshida also stated that he sees storytelling potential within a new Final Fantasy Tactics game, even if the series has been out of the limelight for a long time. "We love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one," Yoshida said.
Yoshi-P and Other Square Enix Devs Want To Do Another FF Tactics
If Square Enix was to do a new Final Fantasy Tactics game, it likely won't use Final Fantasy 16's more action-focused gameplay as a template, according to localization lead Michael-Christoper Koji Fox and director Takeo Kujiraoka. Both Square Enix developers believe that the most recent Final Fantasy game wouldn't be a "good fit" when considering a new Tactics game.
We love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one.
Despite the developers wanting to do a new Final Fantasy Tactics or a remaster of the original game, it doesn't appear to be in the works at this time. Square Enix's current Final Fantasy-related output includes the new Dawntrail expansion for Final Fantasy 14, the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, as well as Final Fantasy 16's DLC and PC port, among other projects. In terms of RPGs that could scratch the itch of playing a new Final Fantasy Tactics, games like Triangle Strategy and Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord have been praised as throwbacks to the Tactics series. Series creator Yasumi Matsuno even told fans who were asking about a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster to play Unicorn Overlord on social media as well.

The styles of FINAL FANTASY and OGRE BATTLE converge in FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, a strategy RPG created by the minds behind those classic series. A tale of political intrigue and betrayal woven through a complex web of interpersonal relationships, this game requires you to follow a convoluted plot through several twisting chapters.
You assume control a young noble named Ramza, a young lad embroiled in a political revolution that spirals into a supernatural threat endangering the entire world. The influence from the FINAL FANTASY games is seen in the monster designs, spells, weapons, and most notably the character classes. Known as jobs, these character types are taken directly from FINAL FANTASY V, and allow you to completely customize your characters' abilities.
On the battlefield, you will feel the gameplay ties to TACTICS OGRE, as you maneuver your allies around the grid-based map in turn-based strategic combat. The game also features an epic soundtrack from the composers of the OGRE BATTLE series, Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakimoto.
