Summary

  • Sages excel in magical stats, proficient in Black and White Magic, but lack in physical stats.
  • Tellah is a once-great Sage who struggles in Final Fantasy 4 due to age and memory loss.
  • Final Fantasy games offer powerful Sage characters like Leonora and Sophia for magic combat.

Sages are a souped-up version of the Red Mage with all their points invested in magical stats. This makes them adept at using both Black and White Magic, although it comes at the cost of their physical stats being downright abysmal.

7 Final Fantasy Games With The Best Job Systems

The Final Fantasy series helped to define the JRPG genre, with its job system often heralded as one of its strongest and most influential assets.

Players who don't mind a risky party makeup will love putting a Sage in their party to enjoy the best of both worlds. As long as they're protected from any hard-hitting physical attacks, Sages can be a nightmare for enemies at high levels in their respective Final Fantasy games.

Tellah may have been a great Sage in his prime, but this isn't the version of the character that fans see in Final Fantasy 4. Instead, what they see is an old, frail man who has lost his memories and must regain his mastery over magic from the ground up.

While he eventually gains access to several powerful spells, Tellah is way past his prime. This is reflected in the fact that his MP pool stagnates at 80, meaning that he doesn't even have the strength to use Meteor despite re-learning this spell.

Final Fantasy Tactics was a relatively mature experience, but the sequels on portable hardware leaned toward a different direction. These games dealt with isekai plots and charming settings that were clearly geared towards children.

However, that should take nothing away from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and its sequel, which boast compelling strategic gameplay and a fun job system. Players who recruit members of the Nu Mou race in their party can turn them into Sages, allowing players to enjoy a powerful spellcaster who can win fights as long as players protect them at all times.

Jack and his party in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin allows players to tackle dungeons with Jack and his friends, who go on a tear throughout these regions and cut down bigger enemies to size. One of Jack's allies is Sophia, a powerful warrior who can use the Sage job in combat.

Players must complete the quest Ebon Memories: The Tragic Cynic to gain access to this job for Sophia. She can become a powerful magic caster in combat once the Sage job is unlocked, enhancing the options players have in combat against tough foes.

4 Fusoya

One Of The Few Good Lunarians And A Very Powerful Sage

Final Fantasy 14 turned from a buggy MMO into one of the most popular games in the genre that fans can't get enough of. Yoshi-P's reputation in the industry has expanded simply because of the work he put into reviving this game and making it worthy of the Final Fantasy name.

The game lets players take on several jobs, including that of a Sage. Soloing as this class is easier said than done, but that should take nothing away from the Sage's power as players gain access to several powerful Final Fantasy spells that both heal foes and harm enemies.

2 Jack Garland

The Protagonist Can Assume Almost Every Job In The Series, And The Sage Is No Exception

  • Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Jack Garland is one of the most divisive characters in the Final Fantasy series, with his edgy attitude making it easy to laugh at scenes that are meant to be deadly serious. However, as weird as his personality may be, Jack's skills in combat speak for themselves.

He can use any job in the game, including the Sage. Watching him whiz around the arena in his white robes and unleash high-level magic on his foes never ceases to be entertaining.

Final Fantasy 3 was the first game in the series to introduce a Sage, with players being able to maximize this job's abilities if they prioritize it for a character. The Sage has weak physical stats, but its magical capabilities are through the roof.

In a well-balanced party, this job can shine against tough foes and intimidating bosses. Players should be aware to protect any Sage character from physical damage if they don't want their magical powerhouse to fall in battle after a single hit.
