A website celebrating Final Fantasy 9’s 25th anniversary has launched amid rumors of a remake. Final Fantasy 9 was released for the original PlayStation in 2000, and returned the series to a more medieval-like setting following the futuristic feel of Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8. Set in the mystical world of Gaia, Final Fantasy 9 follows a group of heroes as they journey to bring peace to a realm divided by war. While it is often overshadowed by the likes of Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 9 is still highly regarded by fans for its mature themes, memorable cast, and impressive soundtrack.

Many of these fans have been hoping for a remake of Final Fantasy 9 in the wake of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s success, and rumors of Square Enix developing exactly that have been spreading for the past few years. Most notably, a Final Fantasy 9 remake was listed in the now-infamous Nvidia GeForce Now data breach of 2021, a leak that has been proven accurate time and time again. However, there is yet to be any official word on a Final Fantasy 9 remake from Square Enix as of this writing.

Meanwhile, Square Enix has just launched a new website celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9, as reported by VGC. According to the Japanese Final Fantasy 9 website, Square Enix plans to release a line of Final Fantasy 9 collectibles this summer, including figures and plush dolls of beloved characters like Zidane Tribal, Garnet/Dagger, Vivi, Steiner, Eiko, Quina, and more.

New Final Fantasy 9 Website Reignites Remake Speculation

Naturally, some fans are seeing this new Final Fantasy 9 website and line of collectibles as more evidence that Square Enix has a remake in the works. Earlier this year, insiders claimed that this supposed FF9 remake could launch as early as 2026, and some say that it is just one of many classic Final Fantasy titles being remade for modern hardware. When asked about this late last year, Final Fantasy 14's Naoki Yoshida speculated that a hypothetical Final Fantasy 9 remake could span multiple games, just like the ongoing Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.

Of course, this new Final Fantasy 9 website and merchandise could just be a celebration of the original Final Fantasy 9 rather than a sign that Square Enix is indeed developing the often-rumored remake. After all, the company is presumably still busy with confirmed projects like the third Final Fantasy 7 Remake game for the time being. However, the success of the FF7 Remake series is proof that fans are eager to see how the worlds and characters of classic Final Fantasy games would look with a new coat of paint, and Final Fantasy 9 remains one of the most fondly remembered entries in the series 25 years later.
