- FF7 Rebirth expands on FF7 Remake's world, satisfying fans eager for epic journeys and rich side quests.
- Part 3's release date remains a mystery, but developer hints suggest a quicker turnaround due to shared assets.
- Launching Part 3 in 2027 would mark the 30th anniversary of FF7's release, offering a fitting end to the trilogy.
At the beginning of 2024, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth joined Final Fantasy 7 Remake as the second entry in the FF7 Remake trilogy. Taking the party out of Midgar, players were able to explore a detailed take on Final Fantasy 7’s world. Fans have been waiting for a modern Final Fantasy to recapture the epic globetrotting journeys and abundant side content that classic entries enjoyed, and FF7 Rebirth delivered all of that with gusto. It will take some time for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 to tie everything up, but invested players have plenty to do until then.
Plenty of questions won't be answered until the credits have rolled on the last Final Fantasy 7 Remake entry, but the fandom is hoping one answer comes much sooner. FF7 Remake Part 3’s launch timing is a total mystery, and estimates are pointing to another three or four years of waiting before it's out. In theory, the groundwork laid by Remake and Rebirth could allow the third part to come out quicker, but it will still take some time to craft a suitably grand finale. Regardless, its ideal release window is obvious, especially since it could bookend the trilogy with a repeat of Remake’s hardware swan song.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Multiple Timelines Ensure Part 3 Will Be a Hot Mess, and That's a Good Thing
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth went all-in with its take on a multiverse, and this means that the final part of the trilogy could be chaos in the best way.
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Project’s Release Dates Explained
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released for the PS4 on April 10, 2020, and on June 10, 2021, it was updated for PS5 as Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade with exclusive Episode Intermission DLC. The gap between them and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s launch on February 29, 2024, is where fans have drawn their conclusions for FF7R Part 3’s three- or four-year wait time. Fortunately, there are several reasons why it's safe to assume that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will come sooner rather than later.
What FF7 Remake and Rebirth’s Dates Mean For FF7R Part 3
Developer statements have already made it clear that Square Enix intends to get FF7R Part 3 out faster, and it should have several old roadblocks taken care of already. Core gameplay and many assets are shared between Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, with Intergrade and Episode Intermission marking their jump from PS4 to PS5 hardware.
Without the COVID-19 pandemic in the way, adapting the remaining parts of FF7 for the third Remake part would be fairly straightforward, even with any story changes. Finally, there were no pre-release plans for FF7 Rebirth to get Intermission DLC, which means nothing should keep FF7R Part 3 from landing in a very special time slot.
When Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3's Release Would Be Meaningful
Launching Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 roughly three years after FF7 Rebirth would place it squarely in 2027, the 30th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy 7’s release. Whether or not the third remake will actually line up with FF7's Japanese PS1 launch on January 31, 1997, or its North American date of September 7, 1997, making that year will still give a sense of finality to the FF7 Remake project, and potentially the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 as a whole. As a bonus, it could also make a better finale for the PS5 itself.
FF7R Part 3 Could Close Out A Console Generation Like FF7 Remake
Coincidentally, Final Fantasy 7 Remake joined The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima as some of the last PS4 exclusives in its final year before the PS5 launched on November 12, 2020. Because the PS4 was released almost exactly seven years before that, on November 15, 2013, there's reason to suspect that the PS5 could give way to the PS6 in 2027 as well. If this happens, it will make for an especially poetic end to the seven-year journey from Final Fantasy 7 Remake to Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, and the completed trilogy can celebrate by jumping to the PS6.
