In Chapter 8 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Cloud and Aerith run into an orphanage in the Sector 5 Slums. If you speak to Ms. Folia outside the entrance to Leaf House, she tells you five children haven’t come back from their errands, and it's time for class.
At this point, the side quest, Kids on Patrol, triggers. Armed with five clues as to the children's locations, it's up to you to find them and liberate their hideout from the so-called Toad King in exchange for a reward. Here’s where to find the children and defeat the Hedgehog Pie King and his minions so you can complete ‘Kids on Patrol.'

How to Find the Kids on Patrol in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Before you start your search, Ms. Folia explains that you’ll know the five kids you’re looking for on sight: they all have homemade swords strapped to their backs. In terms of where you’ll find each child in this Chapter 8 side quest, Folia gives you five clues to help you focus your search:
- One boy patrols near some concrete pipes.
- One girl likes to do her patrols in public areas with lots of people.
- One boy spends most of his time checking out the shops.
- One girl loves to be fussed over by folks at the community center.
- One boy likes to stand guard at the town gate.
The easiest way to find all the children is to take the looping, clockwise path starting from the orphanage. As you’re facing Leaf House, turn around and take the alleyway on your left. Next, turn left again and carry on until you see the first child in the middle of the thoroughfare. Now, turn around and head down the alleyway until you see a group crowded around the TV you pass on your way into the slums for the first time: the next child is standing towards the back of the group.
As you’re facing the crowd, head forwards bearing slightly right to find the next child at the top of a small hill. Stroll back down the hill and take the turn straight away on your left. Take the next left alleyway, take the next right, and turn left again to find the next child inside a pipe. Follow the path through the pipe back to Leaf House, passing the final child on the way.
When you find each kid, speak to them to inform them that their teacher is looking for them. From this point, they will appear outside the orphanage.
How to Beat the Hedgehog Pie King in FF7 Remake
It turns out, your quest isn’t over once you’ve rounded all the children up. Once you have returned to the orphanage, the kids tell you a ‘Toad King’ has taken over their hideout, and they need you to liberate it for them.
The location you need to head to is marked on your map in green, so head there to get started. In between you and your objective are a few small areas with Hedgehog Pies. When you get to the main arena, you’ll find a Hedgehog Pie King, flanked by two Hedgehog Pie minions.
Hedgehog Pie and Pie Kings are weak to ice and unleash fire attacks, while healing their allies. Hit them with ice-based attacks, slot Elemental paired with Fire Materia for your defenses, and target enemies not actively being healed.
Once your foes are down, you’ll be prompted to fast travel back to Leaf House.
What's the Reward for Completing the Kids on Patrol Side Quest in FF7 Remake?
When you complete this mission on normal or easy difficulties, you’ll unlock a further side quest, ‘A Verified Hero,' and a Nail Bat. This functions as a sword for Cloud which, when used, gives you the Disorder ability. This lets Cloud leap towards his enemy and swing his weapon for an early hit.
The Nail Bat may not have the highest stats, but it does noticeably increase Cloud’s critical hit rate and damage. This means it works well if you’re focused on physical damage with Cloud over magic damage, as it offers no Materia slots.
If you complete Kids on Patrol on hard mode, you’ll get the Telluric Scriptures Vol. VI manuscript.
