Hot off the heels of a strong showing at E3 2019, Square Enix is looking to keep the Final Fantasy 7 Remake train rolling with new information about the upcoming episodic RPG. In a new interview, game director Tetsuya Nomura reveals some more details about Final Fantasy 7 Remake, including what fans can expect in terms of dialogue choices.

Famitsu was able to sit down with Nomura and pick his brain about some of the specifics of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s first episode, which will focus on the Midgar portion of the game. According to Nomura, the main story in FF7 Remake will remain intact but there will be a number of new experiences for players to enjoy. Nomura apparently joked that the game would not encompass two Blu-Ray discs if there weren’t additional content.

Dialogue in Final Fantasy 7 Remake has also expanded beyond the scope of the original to include more options based on player choice. Fans have yet to see what the dialogue options look like in Final Fantasy 7 Remake but the ability to influence the story, regardless of how significant, is sure to be intriguing.

While Square Enix had previously said that the Cloud cross-dressing scene in the game would make it into the remake, Nomura clarified that the development team made some changes to make it more modern. Apparently, replicating the scene as it was in the PlayStation 1 Classic would have led to some unease among players.

Other interesting tidbits from the interview include details on the design of Aerith and Tifa, specifically that Square Enix wanted to make one look more Western and one look more Eastern. Tifa also has abs in the game, which is meant to highlight her athleticism.

It sounds as though Square Enix is looking to preserve as much of Final Fantasy 7’s original spirit as possible, while still giving the Remake some modern touches. New enemies and an item that recovers MP are small changes to the core experience but they will likely go a long way towards making things feeling fresh. In our opinion, after having played Final Fantasy 7 Remake at E3 2019, it seems like Square Enix is on the right track with its approach.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Episode 1 releases March 3, 2020 for PS4.
