Summary
- Square Enix is optimizing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for the Steam Deck.
- During The Game Awards 2024, it was announced that Rebirth would be released for PC on January 23, 2025.
Fans hoping to play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on the Steam Deck when it finally launches for PC are in luck, as Square Enix is currently optimizing the game for Valve’s handheld system. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was one of the biggest releases of 2024, earning much praise when it hit the PS5 back in February. It was eventually nominated for several honors at The Game Awards 2024 on December 12, winning the award for Best Score and Music thanks to Masashi Hamauzu and Mitsuto Suzuki’s rousing soundtrack.
This wasn’t the only big thing to come from The Game Awards 2024, as during the show it was confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is coming to PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 23, with a special 30% discount on pre-orders between now and February 3. Not too long after this announcement, publisher Square Enix revealed the file size and system requirements for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s upcoming PC port, noting that players will need to free up 155 GB of storage space.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Devs Discuss Its Ending and Biggest Changes
In an interview with The Best War Games, Square Enix's Naoki Hamaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase discuss the various changes made in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Some PC gamers will want to play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on their portable Steam Deck, and Square Enix is now optimizing it to run on the hardware. Square Enix confirmed this at the same time as it revealed the hardware requirements for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC (as reported by Eurogamer), promising to share more information on the game’s Steam Deck Verification status at a later date.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC Port Release Date
- January 23, 2025
The Steam Deck was released in early 2022 as a competitor for the Nintendo Switch, allowing Steam users to take their PC libraries with them on the go. Some gamers have even figured out how to run emulators on the Steam Deck, granting curious players access to retro titles for systems like the first PlayStation, a platform made famous by the release of the original Final Fantasy 7 way back in 1997.
The second installment of Final Fantasy 7’s ongoing remake series will soon make its way onto PC, where it will feature a variety of updated features and specifications like updated lighting, enhanced texture quality options, and AI-based graphical upscaling. Sadly, there is still no word if Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or its predecessor will ever be available on Xbox consoles, making Microsoft’s gaming hardware the only mainline platform the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series won’t be playable on as of January 2025.
