The upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will have entirely new cities that did not appear in the original game, according to its director Naoki Hamaguchi. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is among the most eagerly awaited 2024 games, and it seems like it will be a fairly unique take on the original story, just like Final Fantasy 7 Remake before it.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a big hit, selling over seven million units since its release in 2020. While the first game in the remake focused on Midgar, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be set in the world outside of it, revisiting memorable locations such as Junon, Nibelheim, Gold Saucer, and others. However, it seems that fans can expect more than that.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Teases New Story Developments For Returning Character

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth teases a brand-new plotline for one of the game's returning characters, one that drastically departs from their original fate.

Naoki Hamaguchi was recently interviewed by Game Informer, and confirmed that the game will have completely new cities that were not featured in the original Final Fantasy 7. According to Hamaguchi, “In Rebirth, we've added these types of cities like the Crow's Nest – totally new cities that did not exist in the original to go deeper and create this whole worldview of Rebirth.” However, it seems that most of these Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth locations will be optional, smaller places that will somehow complement the narrative. During the interview, the director explained that Crow’s Nest is a very anti-Shinra town and that players will hear about it in Junon, and have the chance to visit there before moving to Costa del Sol, for example. It’s a neat idea that expands the game’s world and could help it feel even more alive.

As previously known, new cities are not everything that may change in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Last month, the game’s creative director Tetsuya Nomura referred to Sephiroth as a protagonist in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, hinting that the character would play a larger role in the story. The first part of the remake already changed some story beats, so players will probably see even more narrative changes coming up soon.

Apart from changing the story and the scope of the world, the upcoming FF7 will also offer new gameplay options. Recently, the creators of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth revealed a dynamic difficulty mode. This new mode, which could be picked instead of Easy or Normal, automatically adjusts enemy difficulty based on the skill level of the player and will work as an option for people who want a good challenge.
