Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth introduces the Item Transmuter, which lets players take materials found throughout the open regions and craft them into various items. This can range from consumables that restore HP and MP to powerful gear and accessories that rank well above those found in chests.
As players rank up their Craftsmanship Level, they will get access to better recipes that will require even more rare items to make. One of these rare crafting materials is the Great Malboro Tendril, which can only be obtained by finding and defeating a legendary Final Fantasy enemy that many fans may be familiar with.
Updated on February 2nd, 2025 by Joshua Leeds: The Great Malboro is a powerful enemy, and even though you may have fought one in previous games, it can still be a challenging battle. This article has been updated to include additional information on its affinities to help you prepare for the battle and not waste any MP or ATB. A recommended party list was also added to make the fight even easier, along with a small section detailing exactly what this rare item can be used for since you will only get one of it.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Best Party Compositions
FF7 Rebirth adds more heroes to the mix, but some work together better than others. Here are the strongest teams players can put together.
Where To Get A Great Malboro Tendril (The Sultan Of Stench)
The only way to obtain a Great Malboro Tendril is by defeating a Great Malboro, the classified enemy in the Gongaga region. Gongaga is the fourth region that players will travel to during Chapter 9. To discover the enemy's location, players must first find and scan four of the Lifesprings found in the region. These can be easily located by activating the Remnawave Towers already marked on the player's map upon reaching the region.
After four Lifesprings have been scanned, Chadley will inform Cloud that the Great Malboro can be found in the southwestern corner of the region, with its location also being added to the map. Scanning all the Lifesprings in this region will also give you additional lore about the region, with Gongaga being a major place in the lore of Final Fantasy 7.
Though this enemy can be found in Chapter 9, the use for the item won't be available until reaching Chapter 12.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: All Gongaga Region Side Quests (& How to Complete Them)
Five new side quests become available in Chapter 9 of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth; four of which take place in the game's Gongaga Region.

- Cloud - Powerful focused attacks on the mouth to try and break it and stop further Bad Breath.
- Aerith - Focus purely on using Ice Spells for damage and to pressure the enemy.
- Tifa - Take advantage when Aerith pressures the enemy to try and stagger it.
The Great Malboro is a difficult enemy no matter what level the party is. Be sure to equip each party member with an Ice Materia and bring plenty of regular potions and Phoenix Downs. It's also highly recommended to have a character equipped with the Shiva summon, as the Great Malboro is weak to Ice damage. During the fight with the Great Malboro, save your ATB bars and let them build up. Whenever the Great Malboro opens its mouth to use a breath attack, use ice magic from each party member to break the attack and Stagger the enemy.
These breath attacks can inflict various ailments on party members, with more being added with each breath attack. In some situations, it may be best to wait out the effects and then use multiple items to recover. Should enough breath attacks be used, the map will be covered in a purple mist, and it will stay there for the rest of the fight. Should this happen, each party member will take a decent amount of damage every second until the end of the fight. This will quickly add up and leave characters stuck at 1 health since the mist won't fully kill them.
Ranged characters such as Aerith are great here as she will already stay away and excel in Magic damage from Materia. When the mist covers the battlefield, there's nothing that can be done aside from defeating the Great Malboro. Instead of trying to heal, simply pick up downed allies and don't waste potions or magic on healing them further as their health will disappear just as quickly. Continue to wait for additional breath attacks and stagger the enemy, prioritizing ice damage to speed up the fight.
What Is The Great Malboro Tendril Used For
Once the battle ends, players will receive the Great Marlboro Tendril. It can then be used to craft the Legendary Bait needed to complete the "Trouble in Paradise" quest which can be started in Chapter 12 by interacting with the quest board in Costa Del Sol. The other ingredients for the Legendary Bait are: a Jabberwock Horn, x5 Pearl Ginger Root, and x5 Ether Onion. The Jabberwock Horn is another fairly difficult item to get as you'll need to come face to face with yet another powerful monster hidden in another world region. Crafting the legendary bait is the only use for the Great Malboro Tendril, so use it to complete the quest without fear or missing out on anything else later in the game.
