Final Fantasy 16 was briefly released on PlayStation Plus, much to the surprise of the fandom, but the game was only available in certain regions and has since been removed. Serving as the 16th main installment in the franchise, Final Fantasy 16 was only just released in 2023, and subscribers had a fleeting time playing the title for free one year later.
Set in the world of Valisthea, Final Fantasy 16 is considered one of the best dark fantasy action RPGs, with a narrative following brothers Clive and Joshua Rosfield, who can summon titan-like monsters called Eikons. The game continued the series’ shift into action combat over turn-based, which divided the community, and it also became the first Final Fantasy title to be released with a Mature rating.
Final Fantasy 16 On Xbox Should Just Be The Beginning
With rumors of Xbox receiving a port of Final Fantasy 16, the action RPG should just be the beginning for multiplatform Final Fantasy releases.
Reported by Wario64 on Twitter, Final Fantasy 16 became a new addition to the PlayStation Plus storefront for a few hours, but it has since been removed with its original price tag returned. Reports also highlighted players were able to load their retail save file, but access to the game is expected to be revoked within the next 24 hours for PS Plus subscribers who managed to download it before it was removed. Noting it was only available for players with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, users living in parts of the US and the UK were reported to be the only ones with access.
Final Fantasy 16 Appears Briefly for PlayStation Plus Subscribers
It’s currently unclear why the game was suddenly available to subscribers, and neither Square Enix nor Sony has made an official statement regarding the error. Suspected to be a glitch, other Final Fantasy fans thought the game’s PS Plus release was designed to compensate for the rumored Xbox announcement. The title has allegedly been touted to appear on Game Pass within the coming months, and developer Naoki Yoshida hopes other franchise titles will potentially join Final Fantasy 16 on Microsoft’s platform in the future.
In addition to the game’s alleged Xbox Game Pass arrival, Final Fantasy 16 has a confirmed PC port release date for September. PC users are expected to have access to the ultimate version of the game, which includes both the Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide DLCs, combined with accessibility to more graphics options.
Unfortunately, PlayStation subscribers who thought they were getting Final Fantasy 16 for free will likely have to wait a bit longer, but the error could be a surefire sign that it’s coming to the PlayStation Plus catalog. In the meantime, Final Fantasy fans have a lot to look forward to before Final Fantasy 17 surfaces, including a possible Final Fantasy Tactics remaster and Final Fantasy 9 remake.
