Final Fantasy 14 players will once again be able to use their Visa Debit cards to pay subscription fees or make purchases in the game's online store again beginning on July 23. After switching to a new payment processor in late April, Final Fantasy 14 became unable to process Visa Debit cards for players in North America, but this problem is nearing its end.

Final Fantasy 14 players began reporting payment issues in late April, which developers have traced back to the implementation of a new payment processor that was put into place on April 23. While initial reports saw errors tied to Visa debit and credit cards, Discover credit cards, and Mastercards issued by Capitol One, Square Enix's official news updates have all centered specifically around Visa Debit.

Issues with the payment system are being resolved following testing, and after a brief maintenance period set for July 23, the system should once again be accepting Visa Debit cards as a valid form of payment. This fix applies to the game's Online Store as well as Square Enix Account Management and Mog Station, a website that allows Final Fantasy 14 players to manage their subscriptions and see information about their accounts. Developers first officially acknowledged problems with the payment system on May 1 after receiving complaints from players who have been unable to pay their subscription fees or make in-game purchases. The Final Fantasy 14 news page provided an update on payment issues in late May to say that a solution was underway and should arrive sometime in July.

Final Fantasy 14 Payment Errors Have Workarounds

While the upcoming fix should be good news for players who use Visa Debit cards as their primary form of payment, those players still have more than a week to wait before the payment processor will accept payments from their cards again. As a workaround, developers have noted that players still have other payment options available. These include purchasing Crysta, Square Enix's own brand of online currency, which can be bought on Mog Station using PayPal or Amazon Pay, as well as purchasing game time codes from online retailers. Players in the United States who have been away for a while should note the recent payment changes in Final Fantasy 14, as purchases in Mog Station and the Online Store began adding applicable state and local taxes on June 25.

The payment errors came at a particularly bad time for Square Enix, as interest in the MMORPG has been steadily on the rise. The massive Dawntrail expansion launched on July 2, reinvigorating the player base with a graphical overhaul and features like a bump up in the level cap, two new jobs, and another chapter in the story set on a brand-new continent.
