Final Fantasy 14 players have encountered a glitch which crashes their game to the desktop when they perform an item search under certain conditions. While the exact specifications of the crash are uncertain, the issue seems to stem from the expansion of the Glamour Chest from Final Fantasy 14 Patch 6.2.

The Final Fantasy 14 crashing bug manifested after the most recent major content patch, released on August 23. In addition to providing new battle content for Final Fantasy 14, this patch also doubled the players’ Glamour Chest storage from 400 to 800. However, this expansion seems to have caused an issue if players use the /isearch command to locate specific items across their various inventories.

Several players have had their games crash to desktop, indicating it is not an isolated incident. Players immediately went about trying to figure out what exactly was causing the glitch. While many thought it was related to a full Glamour Chest, additional testing seemed to indicate a character’s Chocobo Saddlebags were involved. While a final solution to the Final Fantasy 14 glitch has yet to be found, players currently believe having more than 3200 items stored across inventories and opening one’s Chocobo Saddlebag corrupts the search data, causing the /isearch command to crash.

There has not been an official statement from Final Fantasy 14 about the glitch, but players can assume it is aware of the glitch due to multiple bug reports. If players experience similar crashes, they should send additional reports to ensure the developers are aware of it. In the meantime, players have discovered a way to avoid the crashes: by deleting the itemfdr.dat file from one’s Final Fantasy 14 character folder. This file stores item search data for a character, so deleting it should prevent further crashes, provided one does not re-open their Chocobo Saddlebag, and that players have successfully identified the bug in the first place.

This is not the first, nor will it be the last, glitch in Final Fantasy 14. With the ever-expanding population of the critically-acclaimed MMORPG, players are certain to discover more bugs in the system, especially as it attempts to expand storage options and add new playable jobs. The forum dedicated to discovering the cause of the crash is full of players working hard to help the developers, and is inspiring to see. Hopefully the hard work of these players can help Final Fantasy 14 develop a swift fix to this peculiar crashing glitch.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
