Final Fantasy 14's trials have remarkable bosses, and when facing them in more challenging modes, players can even be rewarded with awesome mounts. The MMO has many unlockable mounts, but those that can be obtained through Extreme trials are often even more special and impressive.

Each of the game's expansions adds a series of similar mounts with different colours and details, and collecting all of them from the Extreme trials allows players the chance to unlock even more special mounts, as is the case with the Kirin mount in A Realm Reborn and the Firebird in Heavensward. Stormblood is no exception to that, adding the seven Kamuy that allow the Kamuy of the Nine Tails to be unlocked in Final Fantasy 14 - and here is everything you need to be able to get it!

Requirements To Get The Kamuy Of The Nine Tails Mount

final fantasy 14 hope on the waves

The Kamuy of the Nine Tails mount is a reward acquired through completing high-end content added to Final Fantasy 14 in the Stormblood expansion. As a result, players will need to reach level 70 with at least one combat job - but it is recommended to reach level 90 to be able to complete the required duties more easily using the Unrestricted Party feature.

The player must also complete the Main Scenario Quests up to level 70 quest "Hope on the Waves". Some of the trials required will be available before that point, but this is the last quest necessary to unlock all the sidequests that will have to be completed.

Unlock The Quest 'A Lone Wolf No More' in Final Fantasy 14

Once every requirement is met, the player will have to unlock all of Stormblood's Extreme trials. At this point, players will have already unlocked the story-difficulty versions of the trials The Pool of Tribute at level 63 with the quest "The Lord of the Revel", Emanation at level 67 with the quest "The Lady of Bliss", The Royal Menagerie at level 70 with the quest "Stormblood", and Castrum Fluminis at level 70 with the quest "The Primary Agreement".

To unlock the Extreme version of these trials, players will need to talk to the Wandering Minstrel (X: 11.6, Y: 12.6) in Kugane, right beside the Kogane Dori aethernet shard. This will initiate the quest "Songs in the Key of Kugane", which requires no steps to be completed: all the player must do is speak to the NPC, then choose the dialogue options connected to each trial. For example, choosing the option to "Talk about Shinryu." Will unlock The Minstrel's Ballad: Shinryu's Domain.

final fantasy 14 unlock hell's lid

There are three other trials players will need to unlock. These are not part of the main story, so they need to be unlocked through completing The Four Lords questline, which can only be undertaken after the MSQ "Hope on the Waves". To start, the adventurer will have to go to Soroban (X: 5.7, Y: 15.8) in The Ruby Sea, more specifically on the Eastern Coast, near the map's exit to Yanxia. Talking to him will initiate the quest "An Auspicious Encounter", which will unlock the dungeon Hell's Lid. Completing it and continuing the story will lead to the trial The Jade Stoa being unlocked, and completing it will allow players to progress on the quest chain.

final fantasy 14 unlock the swallow's compass

The quest "Tortoise in Time" will be next, and it can be picked up with Bunchin (X: 27.8, Y: 16.4) to unlock and complete The Swallow's Compass dungeon, allowing players to move forward on the quest. Once it's finished, the quest "The Fire-bird Down Below" will be available with Bunchin in the same place. This will let players unlock and complete another required trial, Hells' Kier.

Bunchin will then offer yet another quest, "Surpassing the Samurai", that will unlock the last necessary trial, The Wreath of Snakes. After that, the Extreme version of the three last required trials (The Jade Stoa, Hells' Kier, and The Wreath of Snakes) will be available with the Wandering Minstrel. Talking to him in Kugane (X: 11.6, Y: 12.6) and choosing the option to speak of each adversary faced will unlock the challenging mode.

Once every Extreme trial is unlocked, the player will have to repeat them until they get the respective mounts. None of them are guaranteed to drop, so it will often take a few tries to get a mount.

Below you can find each mount you'll have to get:

  • Reveling Kamuy from The Pool of Tribute (Extreme)
final fantasy 14 blissful kamuy
  • Blissful Kamuy from Emanation (Extreme)
final fantasy 14 legendary kamuy
  • Legendary Kamuy from The Minstrel's Ballad: Shinryu's Domain
final fantasy 14 auspicious kamuy
final fantasy 14 lunar kamuy
  • Lunar Kamuy from The Minstrel's Ballad: Tsukuyomi's Pain
final fantasy 14 euphonious kamuy
  • Euphonious Kamuy from Hells' Kier (Extreme)
final fantasy 14 hallowed kamuy
  • Hallowed Kamuy from The Wreath of Snakes (Extreme)

Do note that while completing the trials unsynced by using the Unrestricted Party feature will make it easier and faster to get the mounts, as of Endwalker, it isn't possible to solo every fight. This is mostly because of mechanics, which in some trials require more than one player to be completed. This is the case, for example, with The Pool of Tribute (Extreme), where it's necessary to have someone hold the sword while someone else does damage. Other trials, like The Minstrel's Ballad: Tsukuyomi's Pain, can be completed solo but require a lot of precision to be successful. As a result, it's much easier and faster to do it with someone else.

Every other Stormblood Extreme trial can be challenging to complete alone, depending on the job, although it is possible to solo them. It's still a lot faster to do it with someone else, so it's strongly recommended that players use the Party Finder to gather a group to farm the mounts, make a private group of their own, or attempt to do these fights with at least one other player.

How To Unlock The Kamuy Of The Nine Tails Mount In FF14

final fantasy 14 a lone wolf no more

Only after every mount listed above has been acquired will you have access to the quest "A Lone Wolf No More". The quest can be initiated by talking to the News Hawker (X: 11.6, Y: 9.9) in Kugane. Knowing your reputation for taming the Kamuy, he will ask you to meet his mysterious client in Namai. Those who have completed the quests to get the Firebird and the Kirin mounts won't be surprised to learn that the client is none other than the Wandering Minstrel, a recurring NPC that references Final Fantasy 14's director and producer Naoki Yoshida.

He will tell you about the divine creature known as the Kamuy of the Nine Tails, a solitary auspice who longs for a companion it can consider its equal. Thinking you might be the one it might consider a worthy companion, the character will give you the Fife of the Nine Tails, and you'll have to play it at the indicated destination (X: 25.1, Y: 21.3), also near Namai. A cutscene will show the other Kamuy reunited and the Nine Tails finally revealing itself. The Minstrel, having watched the encounter, will approach and speak to you again, before saying goodbye and wishing you luck on your future journeys with your new mount. The quest will then be completed, with the reward being the Fabled Kamuy Fife. The achievement "Flute of the Plume" will also be unlocked by completing this quest.

As usual, be mindful that the quest's reward will be in your inventory. It's necessary to use the Fabled Kamuy Fife to unlock the Kamuy of the Nine Tails and finally add it to the mount collection.
