Summary

  • Dawntrail features low-poly fruit like Endwalker's square grapes, now with a square tomato.
  • New server type in EU Data Center aims to reduce server congestion for Dawntrail.
  • While some food in Dawntrail looks amazing, the square tomato remains a charmingly low-poly object.

Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail has some hilarious low-poly fruit of its own to rival the infamous square grapes of Endwalker. This comedic detail was discovered by a Final Fantasy 14 player during the Dawntrail Media Tour.

Recently, a number of content creators and media outlets were given a first look at Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail at the Media Tour. These fans got to play the new Viper and Pictomancer jobs, explore some of the regions of Tural, and even experience the first dungeon in the expansion.

However, one fan in particular noticed something comical during the Dawntrail Media Tour. FF14 player and content creator SarahJane shared a picture of a new low-poly fruit from Dawntrail along with her other experiences. The blocky green object appeared to be some sort of apple or peach at first, with even the official Final Fantasy 14 Twitter account discovering it was supposed to be a tomato in the comments. Fans were overjoyed to find the square tomato carrying on the time-honored tradition started by the iconic square grapes from Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker.

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker’s Square Grapes Meme

  • When Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker was first released, some grapes found in the Labyrinthos zone were extremely low-quality, leading to them becoming a meme.
  • A hotfix shortly after launch upgraded the model to a slightly higher polygon version, much to the chagrin of players.
  • The “square grapes” were later immortalized in a new housing item in Final Fantasy 14, and as a real-life stress toy given out at Fan Fest.

That said, not all food from Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail seems to suffer from this low-poly curse. CrystAAHHL, another fan who attended the Media Tour, shared pictures of some of the other delicacies they found in Tural, including a fruit stall and the in-game counterpart to the delicious taco first seen in the official trailer for Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail. This food all looks amazing, suggesting the square tomato may not be a fully-finished set piece quite yet.

Either way, Dawntrail is nearly out, bringing with it the first graphics overhaul of Final Fantasy 14. This massive improvement to graphical fidelity affects all aspects of the game, from character models and environments to lighting and textures. While this means charmingly low-poly objects like the square grapes will likely be fewer and further between from now on, fans were delighted to see the Endwalker meme live on in the Media Tour, even if the square tomato doesn’t make it to launch.
