To enter the Small and Large Animal Competition, interact with the booths behind Josephine's podium, where you can choose any small and large animal from your farm from the menu selection.
For the best chance of winning the Animal Competition, it's best to choose animals with the highest number of hearts or ones with a rare coat color, as Josephine explains when speaking with her. Once you've entered your animals, talk to Josephine again to launch the competition, triggering a cutscene of the winners being announced.
You can win prizes in the competition if you score third, second, or first place in the small or large animal category, and you don't need to bring your animals with you to enter. The competition is pretty tough, so you may have more chance of winning prizes if you enter the contest during your second year of the game after you've had longer to look after your animals and raise their affection.
