Summary

  • 2023 and 2024 are shaping up to be fantastic years for gaming with highly-anticipated titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur's Gate 3, and Hogwarts Legacy on the horizon.
  • February 2024 looks promising with a diverse lineup of games, including the heavily anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
  • 2022 had a strong start with games like God of War Ragnarok and Ghostwire: Tokyo, but 2024 has the potential to surpass it in terms of quality games, especially with the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

2023 is already one of the finest years in gaming, with titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur's Gate 3, and Hogwarts Legacy making up the calendar, and Spider-Man 2 still to come. It's been one great experience after the next, but with early 2024 bringing highly-anticipated releases, too, the quality content may be around for a while, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League being long-awaited.

February 2024 is reminiscent of two years ago, which was one of the most exciting times to be a gamer as quality products released all throughout the month. From the hard-as-nails but immensely rewarding Elden Ring to Dying Light 2 or Total War Warhammer 3, the games that launched were as diverse as they were good. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the big headliner, but February 2024 really has the potential to impress from all sides.

February 2022 was Stacked with Great Games

Last year had a lot to offer in gaming, with titles like God of War Ragnarok, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and Ghostwire: Tokyo, but it can be argued that it started better than it finished. Nobody Saves the World set the standard in January, but the next month saw a handful of amazing games that ensured the calendar year would surpass the somewhat uneventful 2021. OlliOlli World, Sifu, and the next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 were welcomed by fans.

However, while there were strong outings from other developers, two major releases from Guerrilla Games and FromSoftware were the ones that were vying for people's attention. Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West were two of the best games of 2022, and it was easy to see their quality from the moment they launched. Each deployed a wonderful open world and had the means to immerse players for the months to come, on their way to a memorable conclusion that ensured each game was critically acclaimed to no end. February 2022 was the most densely populated month for great games last year, but 2024 has the potential to top it.

2024 Begins with Final Fantasy and More

2024's first two months look strong, especially for fans of the JRPG genre. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the much-anticipated follow-up to 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake and will carry on Cloud and Avalanche's adventure beyond the walls of Midgar. It's the second chapter of a planned trilogy that has remade one of the best games ever and comes just months after Final Fantasy 16 captured the hearts of fans everywhere. Persona 3 Reload is another rerelease of an old classic, this time an Atlus property that continues to rise in popularity. It's turn-based rather than action-focused, and its more mature themes in the dark hour make it largely different from its successor, Persona 4 which is light-hearted in tone and aesthetic.

Outside of the JRPG space, there are a handful of exciting games that are also set for release in February next year. The long-awaited Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was delayed a full year but, all being well, will launch in the month to give fans of Rocksteady something to sink their teeth into. Additionally, Helldivers 2 looks different from its predecessor, meaning it has the potential to stand out as something unique in the third-person, squad-based shooter space. The first three Tomb Raider games are set for a remaster as well, as announced in the recent Nintendo Direct. February 2024 is shaping up to be a strong start for the year, which means the great games will likely continue for a while to come.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches on February 29, 2024, for PS5.
