How To Play Wordle
Wordle went viral back in early 2022; it was popular and easy to clone, which made it a great target for copycats. To make sure players are in the right place, they will need to either head to the New York Times Games Wordle site or the New York Times Crossword and Wordle app. Other versions will have different answers than what is listed here, and many clones have slightly different rules as well.
To get started playing, word puzzle fans have to choose a great starting Wordle word. Great starters:
- Must be five letters long.
- Must be a real English word.
- Cannot be a proper noun.
- Should have a variety of common letters to Wordle words in them.
- Should avoid previous answers.
- Should also avoid plural nouns ending in S.
Once a great word is chosen, type it into the top row of the Wordle grid. This will cause its letters to begin changing colors.
- If a letter turns green, it is right and in the right place or places in the word.
- If the letter becomes yellow, it is right but in the wrong position in the word.
- Letters that become gray are incorrect and won't be in the word of the day.
With these color-coded clues in mind, choose a new word and type that into the Wordle site. Its letters will also change colors. Keep trying new words and getting new clues until the answer is guessed or players run out of their six total tries.
