Wordle is a short daily word game that challenges players to guess a secret five-letter word without any starting clues. It is difficult enough that some players might want a hint or two to help them out.

How To Play Wordle

In order to play Wordle, head to either the New York Times Games website or the New York Times Crossword App. Other websites and apps are out there calling themselves Wordle, but these are the only two locations to find the original. Different Wordles will have different answers and can have slightly different rules of how to play, especially if it is a themed version like the Pokemon-themed Wordle called Squirdle.

Pick a starting word. It must be five letters long, a real English word, and cannot be a proper noun. Players should avoid offensive words like slurs, previous answers to Wordle puzzles, and plural nouns ending in S or ES. Keep in mind that if the day is a US Holiday, the Wordle editor may theme that day's word. Choose a starting word with five different common letters in it, like LATER.
Type the starting Wordle word into the website.
Press enter.
The letters of the chosen word will change to either green, yellow, or gray.
Green letters are right, while gray letters are wrong. Yellow letters are right but in the wrong place in the word.
Use these clues to come up with another word.
Type it into the Wordle grid, and press enter.
These letters will also change colors, getting players closer to the answer.
The grid allows for six total tries, so use them wisely.
There is a new puzzle once a day, and the new one comes around at midnight.
