There are loads of Wordle clones out there. The popularity of the original game, along with its simplicity, made it easy to copy, and there are quite a few direct copycats and themed clones out there. The subject of this article is the original version which is owned and hosted by the New York Times Games. Contained here are the answers and rules for that version of the game only.

In order to play, just type in a starting five-letter word. This word:

Must be a real word.
Must be five letters.
Must not be one of the censored words that the New York Times removed from the database.
Should not be a plural noun ending in S or ES.
Must not be a proper noun.
Should have a variety of common letters in it.
Should not be a previous puzzle answer.

Type it into the Wordle website or Crossword app. This will cause the letters of the chosen word to change colors.

Green letters are correct.
Gray letters are wrong.
Yellow letters are right but in the wrong place in the word.

Keep trying new words and getting new clues until the answer is guessed or the six total tries run out. Puzzles reset daily at midnight local time every day, meaning there is only one puzzle every 24 hours.

The best strategy for winning Wordle is to choose the next word based on the clues the player got from the first word.
